The St. Paul Saints baseball team is part of the North Division of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball. This current Saints baseball team has been around since 1993, when it began playing at Midway Stadium. However, there have been several teams dubbed the St. Paul Saints since the turn of the century. The first known St. Paul Saints baseball team was formed in 1894, when a Sioux City baseball team was transferred over to St. Paul. After playing for five years, the original St. Paul Saints baseball team was moved to Chicago, where it became the current day Chicago White Sox.
Another Saint Paul Saints baseball team showed up in 1915. This minor league St. Paul Saints baseball team was part of the American Association and won the Little World Series in 1924. This team's home base was Lexington Park. Between 1915 and 1960, the St. Paul Saints faced off against its main rival, the Minneapolis Millers. But in 1960, Minnesota's first major league team (the Minnesota Twins) arrived and the St. Paul Saints and the Minneapolis Millers quickly folded.
In 1993, a new St. Paul Saints baseball team was formed as part of the Northern League. The team initially saw quite a bit of hostility from Twins baseball fans, but eventually came to cooperate with the Twins to promote the sport of baseball. In 2005, the St. Paul Saints left the Northern League and joined with the American Association.
Today's St. Paul Saints baseball team is perhaps best known for its wild, over the top promotions. Examples of past promotion events include the following:
-Second Chance Prom
-German Night
-Chinese New Year
-Fan Appreciation Fireworks
-National Tap Dance Day
-Totally Rad 80's Night
-Politically Incorrect Night
-Spam Carving Contest
-Mime Night
The St. Paul Saints baseball team has many wacky traditions and events in addition to the popular promotions. Many of these ideas are thought up by comedian Bill Murray, who is one of the owners of the team. The St. Paul Saints mascot is a pig (and the team has used the headline: "The Twins, in case you haven't heard, have a new stadium. We have a new pig.") and its fans are escorted to their seats by Mrs. Stepford. A sleuth named Guy Tracy can be seen solving mysteries in the stands during St. Paul Saints baseball games. Saints baseball fans can even enjoy massages given by Catholic nuns! These goofy events and promotions keep fans returning week after week and they have helped make the St. Paul Saints baseball team the most successful independent baseball team in the United States.
