"The Stanley Kubrick Collection" - the Best Movie Gift I've Ever Received

DVD Box Set of Kubrick Collection Makes a Great Gift

Jason Cangialosi
Any lover of film obsesses over or at least appreciates Stanley Kubrick. The director's influential hand has touched all of modern cinema, from visual grandiosity to the labyrinths of characters' inner worlds. As I learned in film school, Kubrick is a God of cinema that must be dealt with sooner or later if you are to understand modern filmmaking.

When I ripped into the wrapping and saw those familiar images adorning the large box, I instantly knew Kubrick was in my possession. The Stanley Kubrick Collection is a must have box set of DVDs for any film lover. It certainly had been on my list to Santa even long after I stopped sending letters.

It was an obvious gift for someone who talked endlessly about Kubrick, but one that a dear aunt and uncle have no idea how much I cherish. To have Kubrick's masterpieces at my fingertips whenever I need them is a gift that will last as long as I can see the screen. Or even hear the audio for that matter. Since getting the collection I've seen each of the movies enough times to visualize the films just hearing the audio, or vice versa.

The gift even extended to receiving Kubrick's films not included in the Warner Brothers Collection, which consists of "Lolita", "Dr. Strangelove", "2001: A Space Odyssey", "A Clockwork Orange", "The Shining", "Full Metal Jacket", "Barry Lyndon" and "Eyes Wide Shut." Adding to endless hours of viewing I was also given Kubrick's "Paths of Glory" and "The Killing", which made a defining notch in my DVD collection, minus only a few of his early films.

All of Kubrick's films are rich enough to provide bountiful new experiences with every viewing. Having read piles of books on Kubrick, it makes viewing the films more than just entertainment; it's almost a spiritual experience. For anyone considering giving the "Kubrick Collection" to a film lover, top it off with Thomas Allen Nelson's book Kubrick: A Film Artist's Maze.

An excellent gift to give or receive, indeed!
