The Gardens were established in 1968. It is part of the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. The property allows for exploration and study of wildlife and plant species for many of the different majors offered at the university, including horticulture, forestry, ecology, and landscape architecture. The Garden Club of Georgia also has their headquarters on the property. There is a conservatory, a cafe, a gift shop, the Callaway building that can be used for receptions and meetings, and a day chapel for events such as weddings.
There are many things that go on at the Gardens. On a casual visit, you can look at native plants species and learn about those that are invasive. Unique children's classes and field trips are offered throughout the year, for both little and big kids. There are also adult classes, with offerings such as tree rambles, floral arranging, and festivals. Some of the events at the Gardens are free and others cost a fee. You can buy a membership to the Garden and this reduces the price of the events a little. There are even two plant sales each year, one in the spring and one in the fall. This is a great time to pick out new additions for your personal garden that are good specimens and will grow well in the North Georgia area.
Additionally, the Gardens house many unique works of art. There are bronze sculptures of children playing and learning with their teacher near the Visitor's Center. The chapel has many stunning examples of architecture and custom-made rugs inside. The gift shop has offerings by local artist with emphasis on paintings of the Gardens and nature in general. There are other unique sculptures scattered throughout the property.
For the hiker, there are five miles of nature trails. There are shorter trails and longer trails. These are so very scenic! On any given day, there will be people running on them, families exploring them, and couples taking walks along. Dogs are prohibited however. There are benches along some of the trails for time to sit down and take a break or enjoy views of the Middle Oconee River on the White and Orange trails.
Anytime you need a break from the hectic pace of life or want to see nature in all of its splendor, visit the State Botanical Gardens of Georgia! You won't be sorry that you did.
