The Statue of Liberty

Poem Based on an Image!

Diane Zoller-Ciatto

As I bask in the afterglow

Of this Fourth of July day

I see a lady standing alone

Beckoning all to come her way!

She stands for our freedom

She offers them dreams

To the survivors and refugees

Of suppressive regimes!

Yet so many haters

Come here to this land

To abuse our privileges

As they make their grand stand!

The lady in the harbor

Has welcomed them all

With stories of hardships

Some found a windfall!

So our hats are off

To this lady in the bay

Who stands for our independence

Each and every day!

I often look at it with mixed feelings. On one hand it meant the world to some, but!
