You're in for a surprise if you haven't caught a glimpse of the Goggle Loving, Fantasy Enthusiasts. They're an extremely personable group and would happily explain their hobby to you over a hot cup of tea, which is a small part of what makes them so special. (Aside of course from their clothing style.) For those of you who can't find Neo Victorians (or Steampunkers) nearby, here's a good explanation of their leisurely pursuit:
It's easy to spot Steampunkers gallivanting around the square because of how unique they are in their tastes and the way they dress. Their clothing is such that it reflects the Victorian time period to an Age of Enlightenment and Invention. They can be seen in tuxedos, dresses and hats bearing canes, gears, and gun replicas along with personal features that comply with the Victorian era.
Why are they dressing like this?
Because they have created a portrayal of the world in which the original computer, the very first computer ever known to man, never functioned and life instead advanced through steam powered instruments. It has become a lovable genre that's growing in popularity in Colorado as an ideal fantasy with airships, nobility, sky pirates, and steam instruments. There's even a local company named Victorian Productions having a convention this year inspired by the large and expanding Steampunk trend.
But why would these people live like this?
Because it's a hobby...it isn't much different than loving football, music, gaming, shopping, books, etc... Besides, most Steampunks don't dress up like Steampunks every day, though there may be a small handful that do, they instead set up daily events to show off their talent in period areas such as Glen Eyrie Castle and the local Museums.
I would highly recommend checking them out for yourself so you may appreciate how interesting this group can be. It likely won't be long before everyone on this side of the world knows what Steampunks are, be ahead of the tide and see them ASAP. You might find the genre is to your liking, but remember, once you've come across a member of the Steampunk society you'll never forget that you've met them.
You can find the above mentioned Colorado Steampunk group on Facebook. The information for the Steampunk Convention is here: www.anomalycon.com
