The Story of Amazing Grace

One Tough Feline!

Abby Greenhill
We have all seen or heard stores about cats getting stranded in trees and other places where the fire department had to be called in. Then there are the cases where a cat got stuck in a drainage ditch and needed to be rescued. I am sure you know of more examples where an animal needed some human intervention in order to be saved.

In Sioux City, Iowa recently, Officer Jake Appel was on duty and received a call to respond to an injured animal. He went to the location in the 500 block of Center Street. Underneath a truck he found a cat that was not your average, or routine, call. He was quite shocked by what he found.

What Officer Appel found was a cat with a 3 ½ inch nail through the middle of its head. He was shocked that someone would shoot a cat in the head. But what shocked him even more was the fact that she was purring. Although she must have been in extreme pain, she was acting very normal.

He immediately took the cat to headquarters. After an X-ray was taken it was obvious that the nail entered between her eyes and was nearly all the way through her skull. An animal control worker believes the nail was shot into the cat's head with a nail gun.

A veterinarian was able to remove the nail. It was determined that if it had been just a millimeter in another direction the cat probably would have died. The tough feline has been named 'Grace', which I think is very fitting name for her.

Grace is recovering at an animal hospital where she will stay for another week or so. She did suffer a damaged left eye. It is not known yet if her eye can be saved. The word is that Grace is doing much better than anyone expected. She is purring, eating, and walking around as if nothing happened.

The investigation into this matter is still ongoing. If they are able to determine who did this to Grace, he or she will face criminal charges and will be punished to the fullest extent the law allows.

Animal Control has received several adoption offers from inquiring cat lovers. Hopefully, once Grace is discharged she will be adopted by a loving family and spend her remaining years living a happy and safe life.

If you have any information regarding this case, call the Sioux City Police Crimestoppers at 712-258-TIPS. If the information you provided leads to an arrest and conviction, there will be a cash reward.

This story turned out with a happy ending. Grace survived and she will be adopted. There are sick individuals out there who torture and kill animals for no reason. If you are ever a witness to any type of animal abuse, be sure to report it to the authorities in your area. People who purposely cause injury to an animal should be punished.

Note: June is National 'Adopt a Cat Month'. If you have been wanting a cat, visit a shelter today and give a cat a new lease on life.

Wow, what an awful thought, to hurt a defenseless animal like that. This person is probably 1 step away from doing harm to a human being.

Anyone who could do that to a cat wouldn't think twice about harming a human. :(
