The Story of the Kelly Gang: The World's First Feature Length Film

The worlds first feature length film honor goes to Australia with The Story of the Kelly Gang premiering in Melbourne on December 26 in 1906. A 70 minute long depiction of the life and crimes of popular Australian icon, folk hero and bushranger Ned Kelly.

It was the first dramatic film to run for more than 60 minutes. There are feature-length records of boxing matches which predate it. But who'd want to watch two moustached men with stiff arms trying to biff each other in the most gentlemenly way possible?

The film budget was the $2250 which 100 years ago was an incredibly large sum of money.

Which reminds me of the scene in Bowfinger when Jamie Kennedy's character Dave points out to Steve Martin's Bowfinger that movies cost millions of dollars to make.

His reply being: "That's after gross net deduction profit percentage deferment ten percent of the nut. Cash, every movie cost $2,184."

It would seem that either the extra $66 was spent on advertising the film or The Story of the Kelly Gang is still the most expensive film ever made.

Writing excites me. I tried running away from it but it caught up to me and now it owns me.   View profile
