The Strangest Videos on the MTV VMA Nominee List

Pamela Gifford
There are a number of really good, emotional, soulful, and entertaining videos nominated for a 2010 Video Music Award. But as much as there are great videos, there's also a number of strange ones that pop up in this year's VMA nomination list. After sorting through every nominee, I give you the strangest videos of the 2010 MTV Video Music Award nominees.

Please note that strange does not equal bad unless I directly say "This is bad."

Florence + the Machine - "Dog Days are Over" - Video of the Year - Best Rock Video - Best Art Direction - Best Cinematography

While visually appealing, I couldn't help but feel like there were 70's era Star Trek Andorian fly girls dancing around the lead singer throughout the video. The video did have a nice flow to it but anyone who is a Star Trek fan will get that sci-fi feeling which doesn't go with the feel of the video at all.

Lady Gaga - "Bad Romance" - Video of the Year - Best Dance Music Video - Best Female Video - Best Pop Video - Best Art Direction - Best Choreography - Best Cinematography - Best Direction - Best Editing - Best Special Effects

Obviously this is the most nominated video on the MTV VMA show I love, love this song. I got the general story, though, and it is sound but I have no clue what the purpose the freakishly bizarre costumes serve. It took away from the point of the entire song and premise.

Lady Gaga f/Beyonce - "Telephone" - Video of the Year - Best Collaboration - Best Choreography

Do I really have to explain this one? I generally have a bias against videos which try to turn into a movie of sorts. Not only is it ridiculously long for a music video, the story is full of clichés and is repulsive. This isn't to mention that the song itself is horrible. While I understand why MTV chose this as a VMA nomination, it's still extremely strange.

Beyonce f/Lady Gaga - "Video Phone" - Best Collaoeration - Best Female Video - Best Pop Video - Best Art Direction - Best Choreography

In yet another bad song about telecommunication, while this is a strange video, it is oddly hypnotic. This Gaga-type thing, in my opinion, does not suit Beyonce at all. I think at this point, we can just say that anything with Lady Gaga in it will make it to this list.

Katy Perry f/Snoop Dogg - "California Gurls" - Best Female Video - Best Pop Video

I love the song, love the video but do admit that the last thing I really wanted to see in relation to a game that I play with my kids is a half naked Katy Perry and group dancing provocatively and gummy bears giving the finger.

Jay-Z & Swiss Beatz - "On to the Next One" - Best Hip Hop Video

My mind was already on overload within the first 45 seconds of this video. I felt like my brain was being treated like a computer and I was supposed to absorb all the information from the flashes of images that passed on the screen. It was quite strange.

MGMT - "Flash Delirium" - Best Rock Video

As if the title didn't clue listeners in to what the video might hold; let's just say this was a weird and creepy video.

Muse - "Uprising" - Best Rock Video - Best Special Effects

A very cool video, even if it is really strange. It is a video filled with miniatures, toys, and giant demonic teddy bears that are apparently the distant and evil cousins of the cuddly Star Wars Ewoks. I'm beginning to really like Muse.

P!nk - "Funhouse" - Best Direction - Best Editing

One of my favorite singers, and this is a great song and video. But any video that features creepy clowns hits my strange list. I'm actually surprised that P!nk hasn't been nominated more on this year's VMA's.

Miike Snow - "Animal" - Best Editing

Watching this, I felt the same way I did when watching Jay-Z & Swiss Beatz's, "On to the Next One" video. All the animal heads made me feel like I was on hallucinogens. While the video is alright, I don't like the song at all but the two seemed to suit each other.

Dan Black - "Symphonies" - Best Special Effects - Breakthrough Video

I don't care for the song or the video. The video is all one big mesh of things that appeared film iconic in decades past. It looked like a big mess to me and was just over strange with no apparent purpose.

Justin Bieber - "Baby" - Best New Artist

Seeing a kid younger then my stepson singing about first loves and "Baby, baby, oh..." just strikes me as really, really weird. And creepy. And disturbing.

The 2010 MTV Video Music Awards will take place in Los Angeles instead of New York this year. Watch it live on September 12, 2010 at 9/8c on MTV.
