The Style of Leadership that Will Be the Most Effective in Corporate America

In corporate America there are many different challenges faced in daily operations. There is a need for the type of leadership that can meet up to these challenges. It is important that the right style of leadership be in place to accommodate this.

According to Kurt Lewin, who in the 1930s believed that there were three types of leadership: Autocratic, Democratic, and laissez-faire. I personally believe from having past management experience that Democratic leadership will be the most effective type of leadership in corporate America. Now Democratic leadership is defined by Lewin as the type that allows team input when making decisions. Some people may feel that this type of leadership slows down progress. I actually feel that Democratic leadership is very productive. Unlike the other types of leadership, having collective ideas from a group will prevent ineffective decisions decision making.

A democratic leader makes decisions that are unbiased and fair. Most people prefer a leader that is democratic rather than autocratic simply because nobody likes to be dictated to. Companies that have democratic leadership in place are normally successful. There are a few companies that I can think of that have succeeded under democratic leadership. Home Depot, Microsoft, and Southwest Airlines are just a few of many standout companies that I believe have been successful as a result of democratic leadership. Now there are some companies that have encountered major situations as a result of laissez-faire leadership is one that I won't mention by name but by innuendo. It is the company that is responsible for what may be the biggest environmental disaster in U.S. history. Laissez faire leadership is the worst type of leadership. Not only does it show passiveness, but it also may allude to a week perspective. People are almost never loyal to laissez faire leaders because they may feel a lack of support.

Out of the three types of leadership democratic is the most effective in corporate America. It provides a sense of fairness by allowing collective thoughts. People feel more appreciated under this type of leadership because it gives them an opportunity to be heard.
