The Success of Product Placement in Movies

Over the past 20 years Hollywood movies have done more than fulfill our entertainment needs. While many blockbuster films made millions of dollars at the box office the companies that advertised products were also very profitable. Product placement in movies has evolved into somewhat of an advertising trend.

I remember when the children were eating Reese's pieces candy in the movie "E.T. The Extra Terrestrial." I also remember seeing an America airlines plane as it flew quietly across the screen in the movie "Home Alone." Since these classic blockbuster films have dazzled moviegoers all over the world there has been a tremendous increase in product placement in movies. Before films like these the only product placements that we saw in movie theaters were ads for popcorn and candy. When people go to the movies they have a tendency to pay close attention to details. This is why product placement has been so successful. We have seen products such as; cell phones, automobiles, and foods only to name a few that have been strategically placed in movies. In the past most of the latest electronic gadgets were introduced in James Bond movies however this is no longer the case. Today there is a strong chance that you will see some type of product placement in almost any and every movie on the big screen. Because of the huge profit potential more companies are eager to partner with movie producers to successfully introduce new products. These product placements in movies have led to increased profitability. One of the latest product placement successes has been that of Volvo in the most third film of the Twilight Saga "Eclipse." I am sure that with the success of the movie that Volvo has surely seen an increase in automobile sales.

Product placement in movies has been very successful. It has both increased visibility and profitability for many companies. Regardless of what kind of movie that we go see it will not be without some form of product placement. I believe that in the near future that new products will not just make brief cameos in movies but instead will be featured for its entire duration.
