"The Sugar Queen"

Book Review

Tonya Smith
This is the second book from North Carolina native Sarah Addison Allen. She has spun her magic yet again in The Sugar Queen. In this story, Josey is a grown woman living with her ailing mother and taking on the weight of the world. She has self imposed an exile of helping out everyone but herself. That is until an unexpected event turns her world on its heels.

Josey was not a very good kid, but also not a very bad kid. She has been led to believe that her life is that of servitude. She copes with the void that appears from neglecting herself by converting her bedroom closet into a private sanctuary. Josey creates a world with pictures of far away places and books written about far away lands, and dreams of the love she finds inside her books. She also finds love in the sweet treats that she is told are not good for her figure.

As luck would have it, Josey's world is invaded by a sweet lady named Della. Della is sand paper, where Josey is soft cotton. Della is on the run from a life that is full of strife and pain. She bombards Josey's quiet, safe world not really meaning to, but with a purpose. As events unfold, Josey is forced to look at her life and how she has come to be in the position she is in.

Like a delicate flower, afraid to burst open, The Sugar Queen is full of wonder and beauty. Open up this book and be transported to a secret world of sweetness and magic.

Sarah Addison Allen was born and raised in Asheville, North Carolina. One could gather from her books that she is a sweet and magical woman. Her use of words and her ability to weave characters together to create a recipe of success in her books is amazing. Please check her website out for much more information. www.sarahaddisonallen.com
