The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemmingway is an excellent novel of many contrasting emotions. Scribner published the novel in 1995. The novel was first Copyrighted in 1926, this novel falls under the category of drama. The Sun Also Rises is great story of the life after war, and one's war with their emotions.
The story takes place in two different places in the 1920s. The first part of the book is set in Paris, France, and then is moved to Spain. There are many conflicts throughout the novel but the most stressed conflict is man versus man, between Jake and Brett. Jake and Brett are in love with each other but because of Jake's war wound, cannot sleep together. This conflict causes must frustration between the two throughout the novel. The obvious protagonist is Jake, through whom the story is told in the first person perspective. The antagonist could be perceived as Brett, because she tortures Jake with sexual tempting she knows he cannot accept. The less obvious antagonist is not a person but the wound Jake received in the war. Throughout the novel Jake disgraces having received the wound and when he tries to live a regular life without thought of it, it is pushed back into his face.
The rising action of the novel The Sun Also Rises is made evident throughout the novel as whether or not Brett and Jake will be able to share a life together. The climax of the novel is when Jake is forced to pick between the respect he has earned with his friend Montayo and to help Brett. The resolution is in disaster because he forsakes his friend Montayo, the bullfighter Romero is almost unable to fight in the ring and Jake is still left with the reoccurring realization that he cannot live a normal, loving life with Brett.
Many characters made impacts throughout the novel The Sun Also Rises . The character that made one of the most important impacts is Cohn. Cohn throughout the novel is perceived as a weak person who bases their image after other people. The big impact he made was when he beat up the bullfighter Romero and leaves him almost unable to perform in the arena. That impact also gave Brett an excuse to tend to Romero and be with him more. If Cohn had not made that impact, the novel would have ended in only minor tragedy because Romero's life would not have been ruined by the injuries Cohn inflicted upon him.
Any person wishing to experience an emotional roller coaster ride when reading a novel should read The Sun Also Rises. The novel describes the lives of post World War I people and veterans. Sex and drunkenness is presented in every chapter in ironic witty ways. The novel is a great read for people who are not easily offended and enjoy reading about emotionally unstable characters. Although the story can be a little repetitive at times I would still recommend the novel as consideration to be read.
