The Super Naturals: Spring's New Palette of Beauty Boosters

Candace Leigh Coulombe
Shed the furs and Burberrys of fall. It's time to clean both the closet and the cosmetics bag. While the super-natural styles of seasons past played homage either the hippie-gypsy or the woodland sprite, a refreshing womanly ease is the key this spring. No gimmicks, no gloss, and no fairyland glitter. Take your cues from the effortless chic of late 60's screen heroines. And be ready to star in your own road story.

Embrace a few beauty boosters-the best of new products and old-school cool.

Matte Love

In the original Star Trek series, silk was placed over the lens when women were the focus of the shot. And though we could all benefit from a filter and great lighting, a little foundation enhances even the naturally lovely. Go for the matte this spring instead of the dew. Fresh-faced beauty starts with an impeccably smooth, shine-free and poreless canvas. Try a mattifying gel or foundation primer, cream concealer where needed, followed by a foundation with SPF. Indulge in a plush brush for fine delivery of micro-milled pressed powder.

In Living Color

Add a lively flush to that flawless face. A subtle sun kiss beats the disco bronze. Mix a peachy-pink blush with a bronzer for a radiant effect. Or try one of the new cream convertible colors to add a healthy tint to lids, lips and cheeks.

Arch Unrivaled

Brows are back! After veering toward unhealthy thinness, fashion intervention has rescued full brows. They should still be well-tended, professionally arched and, for heaven's sake, distinctly two. For the over-waxed, invest in a small, firm-bristled angle brush and the appropriate color-matched powder. Your stylist can assist in the fine art of natural brow restoration. Keep the eyes the focus with rich chocolate liner and mascara-both bottom and top lashes for the younger set and top lashes only for the rest. Trust.

Nude and Improved

Toss the sticky sparkle gloss along with the logo-sequined baby tees. The stripped lip requires something better than candy-scented shellac. Turn to Faye Dunaway in Bonnie and Clyde or the original Thomas Crowne Affair. Full, pale lips. Choose a creamy formula in light shades of caramel, honey, tawny or nearly nude.

The Whole Shebang

More "super" than "natural," the Barbarella do is definitely in. Go for length and fullness, whether natural or faux, in both blow-outs and waves. Solids are key in fashion, monochromatic makeup palettes and hair color. Instead of highlight after highlight, seek sun-washed strawberry, golden blonde and honey wheat brown. Side-swept looks are falling out of favor. Commit to the full bang and middle part or grow those layers out. Simplify with a single stellar color and one great length.
