The most special thing of all, though, is when I walk in the door and that little voice says in a very excited way Nana, Nana. Those are the sweetest words that I have ever heard. Sophia is a very charming and sweet little girl. As we are sitting around playing or whatever we might be doing, she will stop what she is doing and say, "Hi Nana", and I will answer back, "Hi Sophia". The first day I arrived this probably happened 15 times in three hours.
When I was a child, I had a close relationship with my Grandmother, and I want that same kind of relationship with Sophia. When Grandpa Phillip died I was about 6 years old. Grandma Emma came to live with us, but we moved away when I was about 12 years old. Grandma didn't want to leave where all of the rest of her family lived, and so she stayed behind. We were always so excited to see our Grandma Emma when she came to visit. I missed her terribly at first. When she came to visit she would usually stay for months at a time.
I normally wait until my son invites me to come for a visit. Which, luckily for me, is quite often. This time he called me up and told me of a concert that the Colorado Sympony was playing that he knew was my favorite (On March, 12th they played Scheherazade). Now you might think, why would she go all the way to Colorado for a concert? There are two reasons. One is that my son plays principal trumpet with the symphony and the other is I want to visit with my granddaughter.
Scheherazade was just the excuse to get me to Colorado. So I did what I thought I wouldn't do. I booked my airline flight ( I wrote a piece on Flying is No Longer Fun), and off I went. So here I am looking forward to spending a lot of fun time with Sophia and her Mommy and Daddy. I have lots of plans for places to go and things to see. You may have seen some of my photos of sights from around Colorado already.
When Sophia gets a little older, I'll tell her about my Grandma Emma, and the fun things that we used to do. That way Sophia will get to know about people in my life who made a difference. She hasn't come downstairs yet this morning. I'm looking forward to hearing those words as she comes in the room of, "Hi Nana". I can hardley wait.

Post a CommentAren't grandchildren wonderful? Love the story.
Colorado is beautiful, my daughter was stationed at Fort Carson,in Co. Springs. Your little grandaughter sounds sweet. I teach preschool and I feel like a Nana.
Such a sweetheart! I have four grand kids and they all live nearby, so I m fortunate to see them all the time! Life is so good when you have grandchildren! Nice story!
Sweet. I miss when my kids were babies but look forward to grandbabies. My mom is known as Grammy...wonder what I will be?
How sweet!
I love that word too! My daughter wanted my grandson to call me Grammie. But he didn't take to the word at all. Then one day when I was leaving, he cried Nana and that stuck. It's my favorite word next to Mother.
I'm visiting three of my grandchildren as I read your article. We are outside on this beautiful Virginia day (so unlike my last visit with the snowstorms) and I am watching two of them from the balcony as they ride their jeep around the patio. I love spending time with all of my grandchildren, so I know exactly what you mean.
Jersey Nana has it spot on really. Like the picture. Sophia looks really anxious to get at you!
Pat, I'm with you, I always say, Nana is the nicest 4 letter word I have ever been called and I have a Sophia too, along with Anthony, Alexa, Francesca & Julianna!
This is so nice! I am lucky to have my grand daughter everyday (almost) and it has been a wonderful experience. Thanks for sharing yours!
