United States of America
We get an early start. We will visit a minimum of six Sugar Houses in our area. Two of our favorites is Thurston & Peters and Grampa Joe's Sugar House.
Thurston & Peters
A brand new facility built in 2007 sits at the base of Bond Mountain in West Newfield. This is one of the larges sugar houses that we will visit. State of the art stainless steel equipment will boil the sap. They use a non traditional evaporator. It is run by oil. Most other sugar houses have wood fired boilers. This place is truly impressive and we will again stand in awe upon entering the building. This location is full of history.I hope that you will watch this video. It will not only explain the history of this landmark, but it will how the process of making maple syrup.
Grandpa Joe's Sugar House
There is always a lot of things going on at Grandpa Joe's on sugar weekend. Grandpa Joe's is located at 103 Murch Road in East Baldwin. I had a chance to talk to Ben Mckenney this week. He is owner of this sugar house. He is already preparing for Maple Weekend. He has two bands lined up to play: Low Tide String Band and "JustUs". There is also a maple cooking contest that is sponsored by the North Baldwin Fire Auxilary. Our tummies are very full after we've had the BBQ breakfast. In addition to maple syrup they also have for sale maple nuts (the almonds are to die for), maple cotton, candy, maple popcorn, maple candy, maple fudge, maple whoopie pies and other assorted things. You don't need to wait for maple Sunday to order these things. You can reach them by email at Baldwin_sugar makers@hotmail.com or give them a call at 207-653-3647. The price of the syrup ranges from $6.50 for half pints to 32.00 for half gallons.
I hope that you will get a chance to visit these places. It makes for a wonderful day to spend with the family.

Post a CommentAnother great dog friendly beach is in Stockton Springs, ME. Sandy Point Beach is located just 3 miles north of Stockton Springs on the right heading North across from the Rocky Ridge Motel. Take Steamboat Wharf Road straight to the beach.
It is a 1/2 mile long sandy beach, plenty of parking, allows dogs off-leash if under control. Great hiking trails as well. Bring the family for a wonderful time on the Penobscot River.
If you are headed to Bar Harbor or Downeast Maine this is a perfect place to stop along the way. Your dogs will thank you.

By the way, Fort Knox State Park and the new Penobscot Narrows Observatory is just another 4 miles north beyond the beach. They also allow dogs (on leash) and the view from the top of the 420 foot Observatory is spectacular on a clear day. Fort Knox is a fantastic place for adults and children to visit.
