What is Pneumonia?

Pneumonia is a lung infection that may moderately or severely affect an individual's health. It is a severe form of what is know as the flu. Mild cases are often called "walking pneumonia," but more severe cases can be life threatening.

Length of Sickness

Pneumonia often clears up within a few weeks, although it can be dangerous for babies, elderly individuals and those with a weakened immune system. These individuals may need to be hospitalized.

What Causes Pneumonia?

Pneumonia can be caused by either bacteria or a virus, both of which are airborne (breathed in the lungs). Those who were recently ill, or anyone who suffers with chronic conditions such as: diabetes, cancer, heart disease or asthma is more susceptible to this infection.

Anyone experiencing these symptoms should see their doctor so that she can make an evaluation. A physical exam, chest X-ray or blood test may be ordered to diagnose pneumonia
