The Tail of Daisy Mae: A Story for National Dog Day

Steven Stanton
Anyone who has had a dog can tell you how attached you can get to them and how much of an impact they can have on your life. This story recounts the tale of my first dog and one of my best friends, Daisy.

It was a beautiful day in June and I was 8 years old just playing around on the farm that i lived on with my mom and stepfather. My mom called me in and told me that she had a surprise for me.Intrigued I went into the house and there she was, a dog! It was the cutest puppy I had ever seen, a cross between a German short hair and a chocolate lab. I was ecstatic and instantly we bonded as we ran off and played. I chose to call her daisy because my mom had a big patch of daisy in the front yard and one of the first things that this adorable puppy did was tear apart the whole patch of them!

I had hours of chores to do around the farm, including spraying the thistles, taking care of cattle, and many other duties. And Daisy was by my side constantly no matter what the weather or temperature outside she didn't leave my side. I couldn't have asked for a better friend than her. I never had friends at school, but I knew that when the bus dropped me off, she would be there to greet me back home. I tear up thinking about it, because even though Daisy passed away some years ago I have yet to meet a person that is that loyal and caring. Daisy Mae Dog never judged me and never strayed from my side, and for that I will always remember and love her.
