The Tails of Three Pugs

Julie Boehlke
Once upon a time there were three pugs; Chewey, Oliver and Mushu. Their tails were the furthest thing from straight, as a matter of fact, they were quite curly. The curlier their tails were the happier they were. If their tails were straight and pointing down that either means they were unhappy or just not feeling well, every pug lover knows that.

Chewy, Oliver and Mushu's mommy loved to give all three pugs treats. Everytime they came in from outdoors, they got a treat. Anytime they did a special trick they also got a treat. All three pugs looked forward to getting their treats throughout the day from their mommy.

One thing the pugs loved even more than their treats was human food, when mommy and the rest of the family would eat dinner, the pugs would always be right there waiting for a morsel of scrumptious food to drop, or for a child to secretly pass them something to eat. Sometimes the pugs would be bad and eat off of the family's dinner plates when they weren't looking. They would also get into the trash cans and other food and garbage that the family would leave out. They knew they weren't supposed to do this but they did it anyway, because one thing they loved the most in this world other than their mommy was food, it didn't't matter what kind of food it was; they would eat it, especially Chewey!

The golden rule mommy taught all of her children in the house was to never to leave food sitting out or to leave their dinner plates on the table, the pugs would find a way to get into it and they would eat it all.

It was the day before Easter and mommy had spent all day working hard at making several cherry pies for the gathering of the family dinner for the next day. She made 7 pies to be exact, the pies looked absolutely delicious and the aroma of her baking filled the house with a scrumptious, mouth watering scent.

Mommy was so busy that whole day that she forgot to give the pugs any kind of treat what so ever.

By that evening, the pugs were starving, especially Chewey, she was the fattest pug and she loved food the most out of all three of the pugs, she could eat the most of whatever morsels were in front of her. She was nick-named the "Pug Garbage Disposal" meaning she would eat everything and anything in sight! The other two pugs, Oliver and Mushu, tried to maintain their perfect pug frames, and tried not to engorge themselves too much in people food, although some human dishes such as bacon and eggs, they simply could not resist.

That evening, mommy and the family all stepped out for a Pre- Easter dinner at the neighbor's house. This meant the pugs were going to be left home alone. This was not the first time the pugs were left alone in the house, they were left many times home alone during the day, the only difference about tonight was that there were 7 cherry pies sitting out on the counter, that were giving off a rather tasty aroma, an aroma that one pug could not resist.

Oliver and Mushu were resting comfortable on the couch, when they heard Chewey start barking wildly in the kitchen, they both ran out because they knew it wasn't good. Chewy was barking at the cherry pies that mommy had set out to cool on the countertop. She was not barking in her typical protective sounding bark, she was barking in her "I want to eat those pies and I'm not supposed to" kind of bark.

All of a sudden Chewey had an idea, she noticed that there was a chair that was sitting very close to the counter top, she figured she could easily jump up on the chair and then make her way to the counter top where the cherry pies were. Sure enough she managed to waddle her hefty little frame up to the counter top and she began to knock all of the pies down one by one. Mushu and Oliver stood their in amazement. Chewey jumped down and started eating the pies like a ravaged beast. All she could think about was those pies and how good they tasted, her tummy was growling so badly all day because she had gotten no treats. "How dare mommy treat me that way- I'll show her!" She thought!

Mushu and Oliver tried to come over and start in on eating the pies too, even though they knew it was wrong. Chewey growled in disapprovement, (bark) "No way!" (she barked even louder) - "All mine!"- (bark) - "Get back, or I will bite!" (bark) Oliver and Mushu trailed it back to the living room and sat back on the couch.

Chewey couldn't get enough of those pies; she inhaled them and ate them faster than she ever ate anything ever! Before she knew it she had ate all 7 of mommy's delicious cherry pies. She didn't know why she did it, something just came over her and she just couldn't stop until the last crumb was gone.

When she was finally done, she didn't know if she could even walk, she was so stuffed! She started to feel really sick, and she knew it would take a while to get over this one, she couldn't hold it in any longer and she had to go get sick!

Suddenly, Chewey said to herself, "It least I got sick by the door, it's not my fault they weren't home and they couldn't let me out, now they will have to clean me and this entire mess up! Ill show them!"

Chewy went to go lay up on the couch with the other pugs, she still didn't feel well and the other pugs could tell because her tail was straight and not curly.

Suddenly, the door opened and mommy was home! She came over and greeted the pugs right away, showering them with kisses and hugs. At first she didn't notice anything was wrong with Chewey. Mommy then told all the pugs that for being good doggies they deserved a treat, so she went out to the kitchen to get the treats and the pugs followed.

She just about fell backwards after she saw someone had gotten into the pies! "Oh my- the pies, all that work, they are all gone!" she cried!

She turned to look at the pugs all sitting there in front of her in a neat little row, she said "Now who made this mess, who?" Then she stopped, she saw that only Chewey had a straight tail and the other pug's tails were very curly. "Chewey did you eat my pies?" Chewy then shuddered and went to the corner. "Chewy, I'm sorry but no treat for you, you are a very bad girl!" Mommy said.

It was the straight tail that gave Chewey away, if the other dogs would have made that mess, they would have straight tails too!

Chewey's mommy was smart and knew right away that Chewey was the troublemaker for the night, the "no curl" to her rear end gave her away. Lucky for Chewey, her mommy loves pugs like they were her own children, so she couldn't help but give Chewey a kiss, rub her sore belly and stay up until midnight baking 7 more Cherry pies.

LOL This is adorable! We had a lab once and she would look so guilty when caught doing something wrong! Once we caught her taking food from the baby's hand and punished her, only to hear a ruckus a couple of hours later - the baby had one hand holding her collar, and the other hand trying to shove a cracker down the dog's throat! The huge dog knew better but didn't want to hurt her and was wiggling and whining for help! It was hilarious!

LOL, Is that where the phrase, "Watch your tail" came from. We had a Dane/St.Bernard/German shepherd mix that worked with the cat to get a plate of kiefflies off the top of the refridgerator. He ate 4 dozen and was sick as a dog. The cat ate none.

P.S. We had a dog do that with homemade apple strudel once, same bout of sickness and everything. I was so mad but...dogs..they are characters!

Is the straight tail a bit like Pinocchio's nose growing longer when he was bad or lied, lol? I had to share this one with my entire family and they all loved it as much as I did!

There's a lesson for everyone: if you feed them, they won't eat your cherry pies. This was really cute, and I hope Chewey learned a lesson. Well, the name says it all. =)
