She gently took a sharp knife and separated them ever so carefully. Some of them looked ok and had enough roots to survive but several had only a smiggen of root....hardly able to be seen. She could have given up on them at that point as most gardeners would have, but she didn't. Instead she gently put them into peat pots with special soil. She then put some miracle grow on them, and brought them in to sit by the kitchen window to get a head start on life. Her husband watching her thought she was wasting her time. Why didn't she just cull them and save time. She somehow just could not do that. It was just the way she was, always saving a stray cat or giving time to someone who was depressed or hurting. She said a prayer and gave them up to God.
When she got up the next morning they were still alive and she was very surprised. Knowing how little root some of them had, she did not hold too much faith they would make it. She picked them up and talked to them and said a prayer. Three days later they were still all alive, even the one she dropped on the floor. She picked them up frequently hardly believing they could be surviving. A week and a half later they had grown 5 inches and were getting new leaves all the time. She could not believe that even the one she dropped on the floor was growing.
Now two weeks later they are almost ready to transplant again into bigger peat pots. They all survived.
The moral of this tomato tale is about life too. Often we give up on people and passions because we can't conceive that things can work when all seems lost. We give up too soon. All the facts logically would say that there is no chance for it to work. People around you say it can't work. It may be a job, an idea, a home business, a marriage,or someone we love that is ill or in trouble. The negative people do not know the power of God and prayer and faith. Prayer, care, time, and faith did save the littlest tomato and years ago it saved my youngest daughter whose birthday is today.
The picture below shows the tiny seedlings that survived. They are much smaller than the rest but now have caught up quickly to the stronger ones.
