The Tea Party Voter - What Are They Supporting, and Why?

Jeff Musall
The image of the Tea Party voter in America depends, like pretty much everything, on the observance. To some they are new revolutionaries deserving recognition equal to the nations' founders. To more realistic people, "Teabaggers" are seen as something quite different.

Question a Tea voter about positions and you will hear "no cap and trade!" OK, what do they suppose we should do about climate change? Just deny it? And let's just say that all the mountains of evidence supporting global warming are wrong - we still need sound energy policy. What's the Tea solution? More drilling. More oil. Use it 'til it's gone,, then deal with the problem.

How about immigration? They scream about the borders and illegal immigration, but won't acknowledge that the borders are more secure than ever and deportations are at an all-time high. And they won't offer any single solution, not any. No path to anything for people here, and no way to deal with the obvious fact that there are millions of people here who have become a big chunk of the economy.

They talk about excess spending, yet won't even consider cuts to the military. Do we really need hundreds of bases all over the world? They attack Social Security, yet don't offer any alternative except to privatize. Social Security is a favorite demon of the right, even though it is sound.

Don't let them fool you, Social Security only needs minor tweaks to be solvent for as far into the future as we can see. The easiest fix is to simply eliminate the cap. If we did away with the income cap on Social Security tax, there would be more than enough money in the system.

Tea types rail about taxes yet don't acknowledge President Obama lowered taxes for over 90 percent of Americans, and wants to continue to do so. Republicans won't allow that unless income over 250,000 gets a tax cut too. Yes, it's a misstatement to say Obama doesn't favor tax cuts for the rich. Even those making more than 250,000 will get a break on income up to that amount.

Tea candidate Sharron Angle mocks autism. Carl Paladino wants to make internment camps for those receiving aid. Christine O'Donnell claims to have classified info saying China wants to attack the United States.

And in her debate, Christine O'Donnell suggested that "communities decide" Constitutional issues like free speech and religious expression. Yes, that's a good idea - thousands of different interpretations of Constitutional rights depending on local whim.

In summation, today's conservatives, and especially those in the Tea movement, are like the driver who ignores all warnings and keeps on driving. Imagine a car with a busted radiator. Republicans of yesteryear were like the the driver who would put water in when it started to boil, but wouldn't address the problem.

Today's nutcase right doesn't even want to add the water, since to do so might be considered "progressive." They just want to drive, pedal to the metal, straight ahead with the same tired policies.

They don't want to act on climate change, energy independence, immigration, health care, market regulation, infrastructure building, military reform, or any of the important issues facing us. Just keep on a drivin'.

The more grounded among us cannot allow that to happen.

And totally typical of lefty BS speak, Sextons' claim that TP folks want Palin as president? BS Tim. In straw polls again and again, she does not win. We love her voice and how she makes you folks so incensed and crazy, but do not want her for president. But we do largely agree with most of her concepts. Better get used to it - "70% favor Tea Party principles" so enjoy!

My two cents: ask me about cap and trade Jeff. I will give ya far more than what you proclaim. IMMIGRATION - SEAL THE BORDERS then we'll talk. Even Obama admitted this. C'mon Jeff. Jesus! SSI -you are DEAD ON RIGHT! NO ceiling for contributions. Good idea. The tax thing about Obama giving 90% tax cuts is BS and ya know it. The sunset of Bush cuts will kill any hope of econ. recovery for now. Climate Change? We believe it is not an emergency and not all man's faulty like you do, but then we do not favor global; government like you and yours do, so... And "The more grounded among us cannot allow that to happen." Are you nuts? Conservatism is GROUNDED in what is, not what if Marx was right. I swear Jeff, you can spin a yarn for sure.

What is frightening is the out of state money used to try to propel these fringe candidates into office where they presumably will be easily manipulated by those who financed their ascent onto the national stage.

One of the things that have always troubled me that you have eloquently stated is this idea of allowing communities to decide constitutional issues. That is one of the most ridiculous arguments that many conservative, especially religious nuts forward and it is so nothing more than a strategy for gaining political power. States like Utah that tread the line with personal freedom are a great example. Not all of the population living there is Mormon yet they are subjected to laws that are Christian inspired. Good article Jeff.

You can call the Tea Party “Baggers, Racists, Bigots etc”. We know there is no truth to it,….What you WON’T be able to call us is NON-VOTERS!!

  • Keith Bonnett10/17/2010

Hey, Tim, Geroge, Julie, Jeff, Michael, YES… ALL YOU WHITE PEOPLE!! Name calling does not solve this http://www.usdebtclock.org/ . Social programs and entitlement don’t solve it. Hiding behind WHITE faces, and calling others bigots, and racists will never solve it either. And you, Orchiolum, WE Stand for what is in the Constitution – NOT what someone else WANT’S in the Constitution for today’s agenda!!

  • Orchiolum10/16/2010

They lust for an America which is greedier, less humane, less equal, more polluted and dangerous to her own citizens. Their "leaders" don't even conceal their personal bigotry, and their hypocritical view of the Constitution is shallow and self-serving. They won't gain much power, but the fact they they garner any at all should be sobering in country progressing into the future...if indeed we are.

They are supporting an America that existed before 1860. What I can't understand is why they want Sarah Palin to run for President when, if the Tea-Aliban Party gets control of this country, she won't even be allowed to vote.

  • George Sorros10/14/2010

Why do you put yourself out there as a knowledgable person on the "Tea Part"? All you are interested in doing is denegrsaade it. What are you scared of, the Truth?

  • Julia Bodeeb10/14/2010

The TP is a hoot. The O'Donnell debate was hilarious. She couldn't even talk about Supreme Court decisions. Total lack of intellect
