The Television Blog Phenomenon

Your Favorite TV Series Has One, so Join In!

Jan Peterson
In today's entertainment scene, it's simply not enough to enjoy watching a television program. If you are a true fan of any prime time series, you've got to get more involved than that! You've got to blog it and share your own take on the show with others who want to do the same.

The Blog Herald addresses the question about the number of blogs in the blogosphere in its article, "How Many Blogs Are There? Is Someone Still Counting?" written by Anne Helmond February 11, 2008. According to Helmond, not counting the 72.82 million Chinese Blogs, there were 112.8 million blogs written in English at the time she wrote her article as compiled by Technorati. It's a phenomenon that isn't going away, so why not join in? There are blogs for almost every show on TV!

Chris Harrison blogs 'The Bachelor'

For fans of 'The Bachelor', you can find a recap of the most recent episode as well as behind the scenes scoop on Chris Harrison's blog on Entertainment Weekly's PopWatch. So, if you missed an episode, or want to get the real spin on the goings on, this blog will fill you in!

'Lost' Blogs

The fans of ABC's 'Lost;' have almost become cult-like. The show and its fans will most likely rank up there with Star Trek in time. The show is so complicated that you can't just drop in to watch an episode every now and then. In fact, even if you watch every episode, you'd better DVR them, because you might need to go back and re-watch one of them to understand what is going on this week. As crazy as all this sounds, the show is very addictive and fascinating with an amazingly talented writing staff! That probably explains the number of 'Lost" blogs out there in cyberspace! Here are a few:

The 'Lost' Blog
- Be sure to check out the "Sneak Peak 5" on this blog that discusses the 100th episode of Lost.
'Lost' Addicts Blog - This blog tells us "After 18 more hours of LOST, it will be over and we will have QUESTIONS answered." (I'm still figuring out the questions!) It has a recap of every episode of the four seasons and is counting down the days to the start of the 2010 season!
'Lost' blog on Bullz-eye.com - The Bullz-eye blogs go into each episode fairly extensively and has a fair amount of blogger comments after each post.
'Lost': A Theory on Time Travel' - This might be the most interesting site for 'Lost' fans. The time travel theory on this site is theorized by Jason Hunter, who is an IT Manager in North Virginia. He writes about 'Lost' in a pseudo-scientific mode, delving into the belief that the island has magnetic properties, and the Dharma project is involved in time travel. Hunter's detailed explanation is quite fascinating! This site is for the true 'Lost' fan who has not missed an episode!

'CougarTown' Blog - EW's PopWatch also has a blog for Cougar Town. This show is picking up steam in its second season, as female baby boomers begin to see themselves (or wish they did) in Courtney Cox's character as the December part of a May-December romance with a hottie.

'Grey's Anatomy': Grey Matter Blog - The Grey Matter blog is the official ABC blog written by the writers of Grey's Anatomy, which provides an interesting perspective on where the writers come up with their incredible plots each week.

'Brothers and Sisters': Bloggers and Sisters Blog - The ABC Bloggers and Sisters Blog recaps all episodes of the show. The blog posts are rather brief, with some of the blogger's comments going into more detail about each episode than the blog writer.

'America Idol' Blogs - The blog list for American Idol is long. The 'American Idol Blogs' claims that they are "Covering the bloggers who cover American Idol. Updated every hour." By clicking on the links they provide you will be transported to sites such as Zap 2 the News, Buzz, Bossip, or Bestweekever.tv. Their blog archives back to February 2008, so you can even read about past contestants.

If your favorite television show isn't listed here, it's easy to find a blog in cyberspace that will satisfy your inner blogger. Check Entertainment Weekly (EW.com), TV Squad, or Tuned In (written by TIME's TV critic James Poniewozik).

The popularity of Television blogs is most likely due to our need for a little catty chatter with others who understand our TV obsession. Our favorite show's characters come into our homes weekly as if they were family, so blogging about the show's most recent situation will provide an avenue to laugh or commiserate with other bloggers. Look up your favorite television show's blog after this week's episode, and try not to make a comment. I dare you!
