The Tempest by William Shakespeare

A Calm After the Storm?

GMJ
A TEMPEST STORM brings a ship to disaster's brink;
Antonio, Alonzo and others fear the ship will sink;
Lighting cracks its whip across the bare-back sky;
"Thundering lighting hath hit the ship!" the mariners cry.

Scene II follows Scene I
As the calm follows the tempest storm;
Miranda and Prospero watch the sinking ship
From their island, safe and warm.

Miranda worries about the passengers;
Prospero tells her all is well and right;
'Twas his black magic spell
That caused the shipwreck plight.

He was once the Duke of Milan
Until Antonio and Alonzo wanted him gone;
Rather than be a prisoner in a prison tower,
He escaped to the island with books of magic power;
He felt that Antonio and Alonzo must atone;
Thus he avenged the overthrow of his throne.

However, Antonio, Alonzo, Ferdinand and more
Come in with the tide to the island shore.

Ariel, Prospero's magical slave
Will be set free if he will only behave;
Ordered to change into a nymph of the sea,
Invisible to all, only for Prospero to see.

The plot then becomes a series of wheels and gears;
Like cupid's arrow, Ariel's music finds the mark of their ears;
Miranda and Ferdinand mark the music of Ariel
Until like so many lovers in love they fell.

What happens next I will not say;
The ending should ne'er be given away;
Though I will say, my good friend,
Thou wilt earn the right to see the end
When you watch or read this play.
