The Ten Best Horror Movies Ever Made

Based on the response, it seems my previous column of the Top Ten War Movies was something of a hit. Therefore, far be it from me to deny my loyal readers the next installment of Hollywood's finest. This time, we'll take a look at the Top Ten Horror Movies. As before, feel free to disagree with me, but you'll be wrong. WARNING: if you have little one's running around, keep them out of range of these movies-they're scary enough for us adults.

10. Cabin Fever (2002). Four teens venture off for a getaway at a remote cabin and encounter a flesh-eating bacteria. Cerina Vincent's weepy, leg-shaving scene is still one of the creepiest things I've ever watched.

9. Jaws (1975). The special effects would seem almost schlocky by today's standards, but that musical score and seeing things from a "shark's eye view" makes this a classic.

8. The Sixth Sense (1999). M. Night Shyamalan may very well be the next Hitchcock. His use of suspense and horror are chilling. Make sure you clutch that pillow when you see anything that is red.

7. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). Dreams are weird. But couple that with a disfigured psychotic killer and you have the makings of a great horror movie.

6. Psycho (1960). Alfred Hitchcock's thriller is considered by many to be the benchmark horror film.

5. Paranormal Activity (2007). The time-lapsed camera sequences that make this film are brilliant and good enough to give you a "pucker factor" of 8 out of 10.

4. Night of the Living Dead (1968). The grand-daddy of all things zombie. George Romero's low-budget hit is superb.

3. Halloween (1978). The movie is scary enough, but that simple, creepy musical score puts John Carpenter's classic in the top three of all time.

2. Quarantine (2008). "Live-action" footage of a mutant rabies outbreak in a downtown L.A. apartment building. My favorite contemporary horror film to date.

1. The Exorcist (1973). Every time I see this movie, I still get the chills. From the make-up to the special effects, this film delivers. Hmm, maybe it has something to do with the subject matter...

Well, there they are. If you're looking for a good scare, make sure you check out one of these gems.

Yes, I did carve the pumpkin you see in this article. I actually won a contest with it.
