The term muscle car usually refers to an automobile with lots of horsepower, limited weight and quick acceleration.
" Old time "Muscle Cars" were machines with big blocks V-8s, by this I mean internal combustion engines with a lot of horsepower per cubic inch,
designed for maximum torque and built for drag racing.
Now choosing an old muscle car as your favorite is a matter of personal preference. The first consideration in choosing the best "Old Muscle Cars of All Time" is to determine what block the automobile has. I will start by listing my favorite motors and go from there.
Big Blocks
#1 426 cu in. Hemi
#2 427 cu in. Chevrolet
#3 428 cu in. Ford
#4 421 cu in GM/Pontiac,Buick
#5 454 cu in GM/Oldsmobile/Chevy
#6 390 cu in Ford
#7 396 cu in Chevy
#8 389 cu in. Pontiac
Some of the best old muscle cars might not have a "big block" but have a high performance "small block", I suppose it depends on who is giving the definition.
I consider the following "small blocks" as filling the requirement of a lot of horsepower, torque, quick acceleration and designed for drag racing.
#1 340 cu in. six pack Mopar
#2 289 cu in. Ford
#3 327 cu in. Chevrolet
#4 351 cu in Ford
#5 350 cu in Chevy
Ok that takes care of the power source and I have always thought it to be a personal preference, but I will list in my opinion "The Ten Best Muscle Cars Ever."
#1 1969 Hemi Charger
#2 1969 Hemi Road Runner
#3 1967 GTO
#4 1968 Camaro
#5 1971 Hemi Cuda
#6 1968 Mustang
#7 1971 440 Challenger
# 8 1969 Chevelle
#9 1967 Olds 442
#10 1969 Trans Am
Honorable mention:
#1 63 Ford..........390
#2 55 Chevy.......327
#3 67 Nova.........396
#4 65 Mustang...289
#5 67 Firebird ....326
The best old muscle cars of all time generally falls with-in the time frame of 1964 through 1974, this however is my take and I have listed some that are outside of the box so to speak. Give me an ole 55 Chevy with a high performance 327 and call me driving a muscle car.

Post a CommentYou missed one big block, the Chrysler 440 Magnum, it is standard equipment in my '68 Charger R/T.
They forgot the most important one. The one you drive, that makes you happy. that one is the best one.
THE BEST CAR ON MY OPINEN
IS THE 1969 CHEVELLE
I HAVE TO PUT THE 426 HEMI #2 IN COMPAIRISON TO THE 63 CATALINA 421 SUPER DUTY...THAT WAS A VERY MEAN, POWERFUL MOTOR AND OF COURSE THE FORD 427 HI PO....TOP 5 421 SUPER DUTY, 426 HEMI, FORD 427, CHEVY 427, AND THE 396
#1 Boss 429 Mustang
This might be slightly biased but, BUT, the 426 HEMI was hands down the king of the muscle car era, PERIOD. And Mustangs, Camaro's, Cuda's and Challengers are not muscle cars, REPEAT THEY ARE NOT MUSCLE CARS, they are Pony cars. 60's muscle cars are 2 door mid/full size cars with big block v-8 with atleast 300hp. Exceptions are Shelby GT500, Yanko Camaro, HEMI Dart, HEMI'Cuda and a few others.
Obviously a Mopar guy here. You left off tha 1964 Thuderbolt which held all the records. And the 1967 GT500 W code was a lot more car than the 68 "Mustang". No Javelin, no Rebel, and the 70' Cuda is worth a lot more than the 71. The 69 TA is not worth near as much as the 72 SD455 TA.
