The Ten Greatest Moments in Kansas City Royals History

In 1969 baseball returned to Kansas City when the Royals entered the American League as an expansion team. Though the Royals have not had much success recently there was a time when the Royals were one of the best teams in the league. Here is a look at the ten greatest moments in franchise history. The list is in chronological order.

April 8, 1969. In the Royals first game they defeat the Minnesota Twins in 12 innings for their first win in franchise history. The final score is 4-3. Lou Piniella leads off the game and gets the first hit in franchise history, a double. Joe Keough drove in the winning run in the 12th inning. The winning pitcher is Moe Drabowsky.

April 27, 1973. Steve Busby pitches the first no-hitter in franchise history when he defeated the Detroit Tigers 3-0.

June 19, 1974. Steve Busby pitches his second career no-hitter when he defeats the Milwaukee Brewers 2-0. The only batter to reach base is George Scott who walks in the second inning.

September 29, 1976. Larry Gura shuts out the Oakland A's 4-0 to clinch the American League Western Division title. It is the first of three consecutive division titles for Kansas City.

May 14, 1977. Jim Colborn pitches the third no-hitter in team history. Colburn shuts out the Texas Rangers 6-0.

October 10,1980. Kansas City wins its first American League Pennant by sweeping the New York Yankees in three games in the League Championship Series. In the decisive game George Brett hits a three run home run in the seventh inning to put the Royals ahead for good. The final score is 4-2. The New York Yankees had defeated the Royals three straight times form 1976-1978.

October 16, 1985. The Kansas City Royals defeat the Toronto Blue Jays in seven games to win their second American League Pennant. The Royal trailed the Blue Jays 3 games to 1, but rally to win the next three games to win the series. The Royals win the decisive game 6-2.

October 27, 1985. The Kansas City Royals defeat the St Louis Cardinals 11-0 in the seventh game of the World Series to win their first World Championship. The Royals become the first team to win a World Series after losing the first two games at home. Once again they will trail in the series 3 games to 1, but again rally to take the series.

August 26, 1991. Bret Saberhagen pitches the fourth no-hitter in team history when he defeats the Chicago White Sox 7-0. Saberhagen strikes out 5 in the game.

September 30, 1992. George Brett gets his 3000th hit of his career when he signals in the seventh inning against Tim Fortugno of the California Angels. George Brett finishes his career with 3154, the most in Royals history.
