The Tennessee Titans

The Tennessee Titans started as the Houston Oilers in 1960 by owner Bud Adams. He was known as one of the most successful of the owners of his respective league because of his financial stability from different oil indenters. They would reach the AFL championship 3 different times winning two of them. After the merger in 1970 the Oilers entered a unproductive slump, but legendary head coach Sid Gilman would bring in much needed talent in Earl Campbell, and Billy Johnson. After time with the team they reached the AFC championship game two straight time but losing them both to the Pittsburgh Steelers. It would take years for them to regain their composure. The next years they went on a record setting slump losing 23 away games in a row. A record that wasn't broken until the Detroit Lions of the 2003 season took the burden off their shoulders. Quarterback Warren Moon would join the team in 1987 but didn't offer much support the first following years reported by Titans.com. After more support from the community and the city the Oilers once again became a threat to other teams. Despite numerous appearances in the playoffs they would not be able to reach the Super Bowl including a AFC wildcard game with the Buffalo Bills in 1992. The game would be remembered because of the Oilers meltdown letting up a 32 point lead slip out of their hands.

The Oilers would move to Tennessee in 1997 to get a fresh start with investors. They were based in Nashville and made trips to Memphis only to play their regular season games. They would finish with a .500 record in two seasons stated by NFL history. In attempts to end ties with Houston the Oilers changed their name to the Titans. The name was to tribute Nashville's nickname as "the Titans of the South." They played the 1999 season with new found energy that earned them a trip to Super Bowl XXXIV were they lost in a memorable battle with the St. Louis Rams by a tackle on receiver Kevin Dyson that came up short of the end zone by one yard. They would not make it back to the Super Bowl. In 2006 they drafted Quarterback Vince Young to improve their record who has shown true improvement in his first season with the team. He would lead the team from a previous 4-12 regular season to a 8-5 starter record in his first year researched by Sportspool.
