The Tester: New Reality Show for PS3 & PSP Owners
We Thought We Had Escaped from Reality Television by Playing Video Games, Now We Get The Tester
According to the narration from the teaser trailer on TheTester.com:
"Coming to the PlayStation network, these eleven gamers will be living together in a PlayStation paradise, all with the same single objective: to become the next PlayStation game tester. Over the course of eight intense weeks they're going to be put through rigorous challenges.
They'll be tested on their creativity, teamwork, and their gaming skills. These tests are designed to separate the week from the strong. Along the way alliances will be formed. But with so much on the line there is no way I will be all fun and games.
Each week they'll be judged on their performances. And a group of panelists will decide who goes home. Only one person will become the tester."
What to Expect from The Tester
In the commercial, the gamers competing to be "The Tester" were seen larping, paint balling, and of course playing video games. Expect The Tester to contain the usual drunken debauchery that runs rampant on other reality television shows. In the trailer, one gamer asked "who wants to have beerios?" as he poured a Corona beer into his bowl of Apple Jacks (it wasn't even a bowl of Cheerios!).
Another gamer in the commercial said: "what's frustrating about communicating through a bull horn to people in bubbles is that I'm communicating through a bullhorn to people in bubbles." With comedic lines like this, how could one not want to watch The Tester?
The Tester would not be a complete reality series without the contestants creating tons of drama between themselves. A female gamer who had "never had a boyfriend" was seen crying into the cameras, in addition to seeing several other participants crying into the cameras.
With so many different things happening to the contestants of The Tester in the commercial that were unrelated to video games, it makes one wonder exactly how The Tester chooses the best video game player. If the state of MTV, where almost no music videos are actually played is any example, then video games will be seen in this reality show when there isn't anything else to fill dead air time.
The Judges
The Tester's panelists includes: Hal Sparks, David Jaffe, and Meredith Molinari (who is also the show's host).
Hal Sparks is a comedian, one may check out his work on his website halsparks.com. David Jaffe is a video game designer who was responsible for directing Twisted Metal and God of War. Meredith Molinari is the show's eye candy (a model), one may view her website meredithmolinari.com.
The Tester is Free from the PlayStation Store
According to an article by Susan Panico, Sr. Director of the PlayStation network, The Tester is "premiering on February 18th exclusively on the PlayStation network...PS3 and PSP owners can download The Tester from PlayStation Store starting February 18th for FREE."
