The Texas Skatium: Dallas' Premier Roller Rink

David Claerr
After we moved to the east side of Dallas, we were delighted to find a traditional-style roller-rink that was newly upgraded and refurbished, with the addition of some modern elements that added to the experience in a novel way. It was great to glide across the polished wooden floors after many years of absence, and introduce our kids to a new experience.

The Texas Skatium is a 33,000 square foot facility that can accommodate 1100 persons. It offers family entertainment in a clean and well-run environment. The Skatium has been family-owned and operated since 1989. Their long experience in the business has resulted in innovative programs and fun, supervised activities, like periodic dance routines you can participate in at the center of the rink, impromptu races, and games. At times, the rink activity swings into disco mode with the sound system pulsing and the mirrored ball overhead scattering the colored lights. At the far end of the rink, a giant 32-ft high screen displays video projections.

Not only is there a large 20,000 square foot main rink to skate on, but there is a smaller practice rink off to the side for beginners. As a courtesy for the smaller children, wheeled supports are provided as a learning aid.

At the snack bar you can purchase hot dogs, pizza, chips, soft drinks and various treats. Arcade games line the walls for a little extra diversion on breaks from skating. Whenever we visit, there is a lively atmosphere, with birthday parties being hosted in the ample dining area.

We were also pleased to find that the Texas Skatium allows you to bring your own wheels, which in our case was our trusty roller-blades, and we thus saved the rental fee and didn't have to re-adjust to the standard skates. Our kids preferred the regular four-wheelers, so we've rented their skates which were fairly new and in good functioning order.

At the Skatium, you can schedule public and private birthday parties, school and church parties or private fund raisers. You can enroll in learn-to-skate programs, or work out with the DFW Speed-skating Club as it trains. If you wish, you may sign up as a member of the club.

The staff of the Skatium has been courteous and professional. The manager is friendly and seems like the type of person that genuinely likes people, which seems to be a bit of a rarity these days. On one visit she waived a rental fee for the rink's skates when my son's new roller-blades, that he had brought, were hurting his feet too much to skate, even though we tried to pay for the rental. It was obvious that she just did it to make him feel better and it was a very nice gesture. We will certainly be returning. Hope to see you there!
