The Thanksgiving Chicken

Mark French
It's a fleeting memory

of a Thanksgiving about forty years ago.

My dad coming home from work

to a Thanksgiving chicken dinner with homemade stuffing.

How he got upset when I told him that Thanksgiving chicken was perfect;

just the right size for our little family, and with stuffing

and home made tortillas my mom made!

They fought over dinner about money, the Thanksgiving chicken

and the size of our little efficiency apartment until I cried out

"I LOVE THANKSGIVING CHICKEN!" and burst into tears.

Sitting at the table in my dad's lap,

The warm smell of Thanksgiving chicken, home made tortillas and stuffing

and my mom and dad at the table holding hands and laughing

about the "Thanksgiving Chicken".

For a sweet moment in time, we were happy, laughing together,

and thankful.
