The Thin Veil of Halloween

A Halloween Poem

Darkwing
Listen hard on halloween

You'll hear the church clock strike thirteen.

You'll know the veil has now grown thin

Allowing the long lost souls to step in.

The moon will shine its silver glow,

The candlelit window lets them know

You welcome them back to your table

Feeding them as well as you are able.

Don't be afraid, for these souls are lonely

Coming back to visit for reasons only

To let you know what is to come

When your life upon this earth is done.

Celebrate this sacred night

With jack o' lanterns and candle light,

Warm yourselves around the fire

And feast with the ancients to heart's desire.

Children in costume will knock your door

Hoping for candies and treats galore,

Just as in ancient days long gone

Soul cakes were given to everyone.

Broth will be stirred and pumpkin pies baked,

A few jars of cider, ye merry to make,

Apples will bob up and down in a pool

As we try to catch them with teeth as our tool.

But never forget 'tis a night of the fae,

They'll visit your garden before break of day,

So save them some gifts to put out for them

And they'll not cause you mischief or create mayhem.

Leave out some food for passing souls,

Pieces of apple, cheese and rolls,

To help them on their weary way

Back to the other side where they'll stay

Until next Halloween.

Awww, thank you, Carol. I'm glad you liked it. I tried to mix ancient with more modern, hoping that it would work out. lol.

Brightest Blessings and thank you for taking the time to read and comment on this poem.
