The Things that Could Have Been

Doug Clore
The things that could have been come swift to mind
Amid the contemplation of my life.
When things that are seem slightly less than kind,
Escape is welcome from the years of strife.
Disbelief is never quite suspended;
Imagination born yet not alive
Brings bitter ruminations still unended.
Nostalgic unknown endings never thrive.
But who can say these mysteries would bless?
What fool could claim a future to unfold
Without the chance of deep unhappiness?
Some fortunes might be better left untold.
When things that could have been come swift to mind
I'll cling to all I love, and true peace find.
