According to the CDC, obesity rates are on the rise in America. But, there are still places in the nation where citizens are trying to keep their obesity rates low. How are the residents of these places staying healthy? The following represent the thinnest states in America.

1. Colorado- 18.9% Obesity Rate
Colorado is known for many things including great skiing slopes, the Colorado Nuggets, and for being the thinnest state in America. According to the CDC, Colorado is the only state who has an obesity rate below 20%. That's a pretty staggering figure. Many factors attribute to this healthy distinction. This includes their culture. The state is known for its outdoors scene, comfortable weather, and vibrant landscapes conducive to activity. There's an outdoor activity for anyone in this versatile state from hiking, skiing, canoeing, or just walking around one of the many public parks in the city.

2. Massachusetts- 21.2% Obesity Rate
According to the the "F as in Fat" study, conducted by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in conjunction with the Trust for America's Health, Massachusetts has an obesity rate of 21.2%. Massachusetts is also a state with many outdoor-friendly activities for its residents. According to the Massachusetts Department of Health and Human Services, the state has the sixth largest system of state forests, parks and wildlife management areas in the country with hundreds of miles of multi-use trails available for hiking, and biking. The government is proactive in programs for its residents like "Mass in Motion" and informing people of updated health statistics.

3. Connecticut- 21.3% Obesity Rate
Located right below Massachusetts is Connecticut who is ranked No.3 in America's thinnest states. One of the most attributable and high profile methods Massachusetts implemented to curb obesity was the state legislation passed in 2006 that removed all soda and sugary beverages from public schools. The State Department of Health also encourages physical activity, including a "walking school bus" program in select cities, where chaperoned students walk to and from school. (www.ctpost.com)

4. Rhode Island- 21.7% Obesity Rate
Rhode Island has been very active in legislation targeted at lowering obesity rates. Restaurants are required to post calorie information in their menus. According to Rhode Island Government, school cafeterias have exceeded national nutrional standards and by 2012, all public school will have implemented rigorous performance-based physical assessments for students. Rhode Island also has great outdoor activities for its citizens to enjoy such as beaches, hiking, fishing, and birdwatching. Rhode Island also encourages farmer's markets and diets rich in fish and seafood.

5. Hawaii- 21.8% Obesity Rate
Hawaii didn't enter into these rankings until 2005. According to the "F as in Fat Study", Hawaii has an obesity rate of 21.8%. This can be attributed to this "paradise" state surrounded by crystal blue waters where citizens can be outdoors and partake in activities and sports like swimming, surfing, diving, and kayaking. Many local diets include fresh tropical fruits and lean seafood. Although Hawaii is ranked No. 5, it still has issues with its populations weight problem and has a long way to go to improve.
