The Three Best 4th of July Firework Events in the Greater Portland, Oregon Area

Lyn McCallister
An exciting part of watching 4th of July fireworks in the Portland, Oregon area is the fact that most of these displays occur near rivers. Why is that exciting? You can view the firework reflections in the water for some truly spectacular images and memories.

If you live in the Portland area if you'll be visiting our friendly city, check out this list of 4th of July Fireworks. I've personally attended each event, and I'll offer some insider perspective into each respective firework display.

Oaks Park is an amusement park located near downtown Portland. Currently celebrating over 100 years of family fun, this park offers a 4th of July experience to fill your entire day. You can bring your own picnic fixings or purchase food onsite. Note that you cannot bring alcohol or your own personal fireworks to Oaks Park.

During the day, your family can enjoy the many amusement rides at the park. Be sure to get a special ride bracelet to help reduce the cost. You can also try to win your kids a toy at one of the many midway games.

The 4th of July Pepsi Fireworks Spectacular will cap off your day in grand style! The fireworks show begins at 9:55 p.m.

Personal experience: The Oaks Park display is very good and you certainly get your money back in entertainment value. The amusement park can fill up so it's best to get there in mid afternoon to early evening to pick out a good spot for firework viewing. The fireworks are exploded out over the Willamette River so you may need to be careful that you don't sit near a tree that might obscure your view.

Bring your own lawn chairs, camping chairs, or blankets and pack a picnic dinner.

Tom McCall Waterfront Park
Location: Downtown Portland, SW Naito Pkwy and SW Yamhill
Admission: Prices vary depending on location and time

At the park, you'll find a fun carnival atmosphere with rides, games, food vendors, and plenty of good live music. The 4th of July fireworks coincides with the annual Safeway Waterfront Festival which runs from July 1-July 6.

This event is very popular and can be quite crowded, particularly if we have a warm and sunny July.

The fireworks show kicks off at 10:00 p.m. and generally lasts about 30 minutes over the Willamette River.

Personal experience: Don't try to park close to this event! Take MAX or a bus or be prepared to walk a distance from your car.

If you don't want to pay to watch this fireworks show, a good tip is to park on the opposite bank of the river. OMSI's parking lot is a very popular location so it can be crowded. However, if you arrive in the early evening, you should get a decent spot.

Fort Vancouver 4th of July Fireworks Show
Location: Fort Vancouver National Historic in Vancouver, Washington just minutes north of Portland. Can be seen from the Columbia River by boat and from the Oregon side.
Admission: $4 per person suggested gate donation
Website

This is the biggest, most spectacular fireworks show that you are likely to see in the west. In fact, the event organizations call the biggest display of fireworks anywhere west of the Mississippi and for good reason.

The celebration gets underway at 11:00 a.m. You can enjoy live music on a large stage as well as visit food and craft booths. Bring your own food, a Frisbee, and a blanket and spend the day people watching with your family. However, do not bring alcohol, your dog, weapons, camping gear, personal fireworks or grills as you will not be allowed in with these items.

The fireworks begin at approximately 10:00 p.m.

Personal experience: Traffic is a nightmare at this event and, if you live in Oregon, it may take you hours to get home. If you have a relative who lives in Vancouver or southwest Washington, consider crashing at their house. Otherwise, you can look into hotel and motel reservations although these fill up well in advance.

If you don't mind the drive (particularly when the 4th is on a Friday or Saturday night), then this show is absolutely the best display of fireworks for your entire family. It is an experience itself that you should try at least once, provided you have plenty of food, water, and patience!

I recommend arriving as early as possible in the day to find a sanctioned parking place. Towing is enforced during this event so pay attention to signage in the area.

No...You cannot see the fireworks at Oaks Park because the trees along the riverfront block the view almost completely.
