The Three Best Bars in Westland, Michigan

R. J. Gardiner
Bars can vary widely in many ways: Atmosphere, price, menu, music, etc. In the city of Westland, Michigan, most residents want their bars to be pretty traditional. They want burgers and sandwiches, TVs that show a lot of sports, and a waitstaff that keeps the alcohol flowing.

Westland has several excellent choices if you want to imbibe a few of your favorite potables and down some food that will stick to your ribs. Here are my three favorites:

3) Last Chance Bar and Grill: At 27758 Warren Road in Westland you will find one of the best places to go on Friday nights. I say this because I am a fish lover, and the Last Chance has arguably the best fish fry in Westland. Perch, cod, and shrimp are in abundance and come with fries(or macaroni and cheese and cole slaw).

You can't go wrong with the fish, but if you are here on a day other than Friday, there are still plenty of great options. Their Mexican dishes are good, especially the nachos supreme, and their pizzas are excellent. Most menu items here cost between $5 and $10.

Live bands perform here on Friday and Saturday, and there is karaoke on Thursdays and sometimes Wednesdays. This place is quite crowded on weekends and is not recommended for somebody looking for a quiet little bar to unwind at. If, however, you are looking to bust loose and have a few drinks at a place where it doesn't matter if you get a little loud, Last Chance is a good choice.

2) Crystal Bar and Grill: On 8051 Middlebelt Road in Westland you will find this popular bar that has plenty of life and good food. The Crystal Club, a huge club sandwich on your choice of bread, is a great deal at $5.95, and the New York Strip steak for $10.95 should satisfy even the most ardent cravings for red meat.

With plenty of TVs for sports and a pool table if you want to challenge your buddies to a game(and perhaps a friendly wager?), this bar is a great place to hang out with friends. There is a DJ here on Wednesday nights, and it gets pretty loud.

The waitstaff are very friendly, as are most of the people I have met here. You'll find the usual drink specials here, like $2 bottles on certain nights, but even when there's not a special, their beer and drink prices are reasonable.

1) Wheat and Rye: Located at 7291 N. Middlebelt Road in Westland, Wheat and Rye has been around for over 20 years. It's not surprising, given their enormous ¾ pound burgers and awesome chili cheese fries. The burgers are an outstanding deal for around $5 depending on the particular burger you order. The chili is also a must try, and there are a few menu items that have chili on them, including the chili fries and chili cheese dog.

Drinks are reasonably priced, and the daily specials let you drink a lot on the cheap. My favorite beverage here is the "black and tan", which is a combination of a dark beer and a light one. Bud and Labatt's Blue are popular here, as they are often the daily special drink. Happy hour is from 2 to 6, but it is the evening when things tend to get fun at this bar.

Evenings when a game is on attracts a big crowd, since wings are 25 cents during Pistons, Red Wings, Tigers, and Lions games. There is karaoke here for those who enjoy showing off their vocal talents(or intentionally looking like fools, depending on your skill level). Either way, it's a fun place where you will likely need to take home at least some of the food you order since there's so much.

If you want to get out and have a few drinks with friends, try one of these bars. It's more fun than sitting at home and drinking by yourself!
