The Three Best Burger Joints in Poughkeepsie

James
Everyone enjoys a good burger, which is why I've compiled this list of the three best burger joints in my home town, Poughkeepsie. While there are a fair number of good restaurants and burger places here, there are a few that head-and-shoulders above the rest. Whether you're just stopping by or live here, you'll definitely want to check these places out.

Shadows on the Hudson

While not strictly a burger joint, Shadows has some of the best in the area. I've been there over fifteen times, and have gotten the burger at least ten. They cook it however you'd like and can place additional toppings on it if you ask. But while the burgers are great, the main attraction of Shadows is the scenery and atmosphere it offers. You get a breathtaking view of the Hudson River combined with a very laid back and modern atmosphere. The restaurant also offers traditional entrees like steak and chicken at moderate prices. Shadows ranks three on this list because, while the burgers are good, you're paying more for the atmosphere and scenery than anything else.

Shadows is located on Rinaldi Blvd, right off Rt. 9 in Poughkeepsie, NY.

Pop's Deli

Pop's Deli offers a wide range of food / deli products, and is by far the best deli in the Poughkeepsie-Pleasant Valley area. That said, they also make exceptional burgers. I've been to the deli hundreds of times and have gotten the burgers dozens, and they have been delicious every time. It's a family-run business and everyone is very personal, even calling infrequent customers by their name. Since it's a deli, you can get pretty much anything you want on your burger and have it cooked however you want. Aside from burgers, you can get pretty much any type of deli food which they always fill with plenty of meat - you won't get a skimpy sandwich at Pop's. The major downside to Pop's Deli is that it closes at about 4pm, so many people won't be able to enjoy their food.

Pop's Deli is located on Route 44 in Pleasant Valley, NY.

Five Guys Burgers & Fries

Five Guys is a rapidly growing franchise that has some of the best burgers I have ever had; in fact, their burger has only been beaten by one other place. Unfortunately, I cannot recall the name of the joint where I had the best burger ever, but it was a dingy place on the bottom floor of a hotel in Virginia Beach. That aside, Five Guys really is the premier burger joint in Poughkeepsie. They've opened up there pretty recently and have been very busy. They only offer burgers, hotdogs, and fries. I've never tried their hot dogs, but their burgers are absolutely delicious. The fries are huge, so don't get a large unless you have another person or two to share with. They do not charge extra for toppings, and you're able to get as many as you want. You can pick anything from tomatoes to jalapeno peppers to A-1 sauce. If you have a small stomach make sure to order the little burger, as the normal burgers are actually doubles and can be quite filling for those with modest stomachs.

Five Guys is located on Route 9, near Spackenkill Road in Poughkeepsie, NY.
