The Three Truly Best Independent Coffee Shops in Tucson Arizona: Down Town

The Best Independent Coffee Shops in Tucson Are Located Down Town

John Savage
I truly believe that the best independent coffee shops in Tucson are located down town. My personal favorite, number one, place to go is Revolutionary Grounds Coffee and Books. Located on Tucson's historic 4th Avenue, Revolutionary Grounds is the perfect place to relax, have some coffee, or a delicious treat, read a book, or work online using their free WiFi. The address is 606 N. 4th Ave. and you cannot miss this eclectic gem. They have good prices as well as very hard to find books available; they even have some toys for the children to play with. The staff is knowledgeable and very friendly; don't forget to tip. Revolutionary Grounds also has a plethora of events that they host, so you will never be bored. Their hours are Monday through Thursday from 7am to 7pm, Friday and Saturday from 8am to 11pm, and Sunday from 9am to 7pm. locally owned and operated since 2008, this is truly Tucson's premier independent coffee house.

However, if this isn't your style, or maybe a little too out of the way, I can also recommend Bentley's House of Coffee and Tea at 1730E. Speedway. Although not located downtown, it is located very close to the University of Arizona and is easily accessible from midtown. This coffee house is quite large and has a nice earthy feel to it. They have a very expansive menu, as well as reasonable prices. The staff is friendly and they have free Wi-Fi, art shows, and an open mic night for those of you are brave enough. They are open until 11pm all nights of the week, which is great for you night owls. Bentley's is probably my second favorite independent coffee house in Tucson. Being that I refuse to go to the chain stores, that's saying a lot.

Another wonderful spot to go in the heart of Tucson is A Shot in the Dark Cafe, located at 121 E. Broadway. They have most features on would look for in an independent coffee house, but they also have one you might have a hard time finding; an indoor smoking patio. That's right; I finally found a place where I can drink coffee, work on my computer, using their free Wi-Fi, and have a good smoke. They also have a selection of cigarettes, smoking tobacco, and lighters for sale right there. They also have community computers you can use if you don't have one. They are a little slow and out of date; however, beggars can't be choosers. The prices are reasonable, the staff friendly, and Shot in the Dark is co-owned by the employees themselves, one feature that makes me think that it must be a nice place to work.

So, if you live in Tucson, or are just visiting, these are the three places I would recommend if you want to relax with a good cup of Joe.
