The Three Types of Salesmen Trying to Sell You Jewelry During the Christmas Season

Often, walking into a jewelry store can be just like walking onto the lot of a car dealership. That's right, those salesmen and saleswomen are looking for you to come on in and have a look. They know you want a Christmas gift that's shiny and sparkly. They know diamonds are a girl's best friend and they know gold never fails. How do I know all of this?

I was a jewelry saleswoman for a good part of the year including during Christmas time. I was looking for people just like you to come into my store. Christmas is the season for gift giving, but you don't want to be proof there's a sucker born every minute. Here are three types of Christmas season jewelry store salesmen or saleswomen.

The small wrists, slim fingered type.

These saleswomen have little wrists and size 5 fingers just so you as an unknowing male can walk in and say, "I'm thinking of buying this bracelet or ring, but I don't know what size my wife's wrists or fingers are." That's the perfect setup for the stealthy, delicately made saleswoman. "Oh does she have wrists like mine?" she'll say to you, and boom you've become one of those suckers.

Before you know it, she'll have you looking at every jewelry case in the place. You might have come in wanting cubic zirconia and she'll have you looking at diamonds. Managers probably handpick these types of women during the interview process just so they can show a glimpse of their wrist and land a big sale.

The buddy-salesman

This guy is going to act like your buddy and your pal. "Hey, man," he'll say. "You know your wife is going to love this Christmas gift. Give it to her, and before you know it man, she'll love you like crazy. Here's my card. Come back and see me soon." Before you know it, you'll think you've made a great friend. Surely, you can buy all of your jewelry from this guy right here. He wouldn't recommend a bad Christmas gift for you, right?

Wrong. That guy's not your friend. It's typical sales knowledge that when a customer gets comfortable with a sales person, he or she becomes a repeat customer.

The "knowledgeable salesman"

Cut, Karat, and Clarity roll off the tongues of these types. They know diamond weight. They know where to find it if you say you want platinum, silver, or even something fake. And if you approach this type of salesman with the word "Christmas gift" in your eyes, forget about it. Remember, it's a popular and true phrase that there's a sucker born every single minute.

The knowledgeable salesman will describe jewelry to you in a way that will get your heart racing. He'll describe how the cut improves the way light reflects off the diamond. And he'll tell you that the karat size makes a bigger difference than you think. But don't believe the hype. All diamonds are a girl's best friend, especially when it comes to Christmas gifts.
