The Time to Sail is Now: a Villanelle

Inspiration to Reach Out and Move On

Barbie Crafts

Though the waves crash the bow,

Your heart is full of fear,

The time to sail is now.

If the fierce winds allow,

Go, hoist off with good cheer,

Though the waves crash the bow.

To wait but disavow,

The ties that bind you here,

The time to sail is now.

You know the way and how,

Sail on past the pier,

Though the waves crash the bow.

Put hand to the plow,

Don't wait another year,

The time to sail is now.

To travel you will vow,

To try to persevere,

Though the waves crash the bow,

The time to sail is now.

    Barbie,

I like the poem, but I don't especially like waves crashing the bow of my Laser which is only 6 inches above the water. If it happens during a race, I will endure it, but not happily, because the waves are accompanied by fast winds that increase the odds that I'll capsize and complicate the task of getting my boat upright again.

I've crewed on 35-40 foot sailboats on Chesapeake Bay in rainy 6-foot seas (tiny compared to what you might encounter on the ocean!) and that was a bit on the scary side, too.

The poem makes me wish I could fit a sail into my schedule today! Sailing has been my passion since 1992 and I hope to continue racing well into my 70s - which is not as unusual as you might think!
