I have watched several episodes over the past few weeks and I find this new brand of Tonight quite entertaining except for one festering distraction. Of course the distraction that I'm speaking of is the bulbous, trying way too hard to be funny, Andy Richter. During Conan's wildly entertaining monologues, the starved-for-attention-wanna-be comedian continually tries to inject his smart mouth commentary into the mix. Very rarely are his attempts at humor on point and most of the time they are merely a distraction and take away from the comedic flow and the genius of Conan. It's bad enough that we constantly hear his annoying, whiny, nasal infused voice through the speakers but even worse when the cameraman and director insist on showing his husky physique on my 50" HDTV.
Many years ago, the master of all sidekicks, Ed McMahon, perfected this art. Ed knew when to speak and when to add his comments or laughter, but most importantly he knew when to let the host run the show and not say a word. Unfortunately for all us today, Andy Richter, shows no signs of even trying to be a solid sidekick on the show. Instead he acts like a spoiled brat who is starved for attention.
I understand that Andy and Conan are longtime friends but come on, Conan, wise up. If Andy needs a job, put your friend to work behind the scenes as a stage hand so all of who stay up late to enjoy your comedy aren't subjected to this debacle. Andy tried a few feeble attempts to make it on his own and he has proven that he is one of the most useless "entertainers" on TV today. He should be very thankful that he has a good friend in Conan to keep his sinking career afloat for so long.
I will continue to watch the Tonight Show to experience the hilarity and antics of Conan. If they don't make a change and remove Mr. Richter I may have to switch and check out Letterman to keep my sanity.

Post a CommentEverything you say is right on the dot! Andy Richter is a poison to Conan and would cost him is job. Also, whenever he doesn't have any joke to interject to Conan's monologue, he'll laugh at every sentence Conan says even if the punchline isn't said yet...
Another thing, Andy joins in on the guests by sitting on the couch during the interview. He's clearly trying to get as much airtime as possible rather than do his job better (which isn't deserved either).
