The Tools You'll Need to Make a Garden

D.M. Paschal
This spring more and more people are looking for an inexpensive way to spend their time. Gardening is turning out to be a common choice when it comes to favorite past-times. Though it is a cheap, simple task, you have to have some idea of what you are doing when you begin planting. More importantly, you need the right tools to effectively prepare and grow your garden.

One thing that is extremely useful if you are growing a fairly large garden is a tiller. These machines grind up the dirt and make the ground more fertile, which is better for your plants. I'm sure you know that plants do not grow especially well in really tough dirt or dirt so loose the rain washes them away. Tillers, though, are fairly large and can cost a good bit of money, so if you are making a smaller garden or can not get your hands on a tiller, you'll have to resort to other means.

If you are one of these people, you should get your hands on several tools. One of which is a cultivator. You use one of these to rip up weeds, along with their roots, so that your garden doesn't get invaded by them. After that, you can use a hoe to till your garden, though it won't get the job done the same as a tiller. Once your gardening area is clear of weeds and somewhat tilled, you need to make rows where you can sow your seeds. For this, you can either use a shovel or a spade. Once you've made your rows you really only need to worry about planting your seeds. You may want to get some gardening soil if you don't feel too confident in the soil you've been using. Soil is sold cheaply in stores, costing about a dollar for every ten pounds.

After that, you only need your seeds, directions, and a source of water. Seeds are cheap and can be bought pretty much anywhere. Directions come with the seeds and can usually be found on the back of the packet. As far as water goes, it really depends on the size of your garden and how far it is from your home. If it is a little flower garden in your front yard, you may just need a watering pail. However, if your garden is a good walking distance from your home, you should go buy a long water hose. The standard is about fifty foot.

Just remember that with the right tools you can turn a bland patch of ground to a spectacular garden of any kind.
