This week, we watched The Tooth Fairy, a family comedy which stars Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Ashley Judd and Julie Andrews. Dwayne plays the role of Derek Thompson, a tough, hard-charging minor league hockey player. Thompson is known as "the tooth fairy" as he has a habit of knocking the teeth out of his opponents. He lacks humility, doesn't believe in dreams and has lost faith in himself.
Derek's outlook in life is awful and his career either. And when he dashed a young fan's hopes and dreams as well as his girlfriend's (Ashley Judd) daughter, he was sentenced to work in Fairyland for two weeks as a tooth fairy. He was charged with a serious crime: killing dreams. The Chief Tooth Fairy played by Julie Andrews made him visit children who have lost their baby teeth and placed them under their pillows. Derek has to get those teeth and exchanged them with money.
But because of Derek's attitude, he ends up in hilarious and embarrassing escapades as he fulfils the mission of his job, to make children's dreams come true instead of ruining them. And as he goes on with his job, he learns important lessons in life and comes face to face with his own dreams as a child.
The entire movie was fun and we had a good laugh. Although on many scenes, I feel the lead actor is overdoing it. But what made me write about the movie are the lessons I picked up - that it's ok to have hopes and dreams. And when you do, believe you can achieve them. Reality is, this world we're living in can be cruel, but we can still hope and believe that something best is in store for us.
I have had so many hopes and dreams as a child. Some of them came to be, some didn't, and I'm ok with it. Because my deepest hope is found in this verse where Jesus said - ",... I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am." (John 14:3, NIV)
