The Orajel and other numbing medicines work for the mild toothache but not like the one I had. I've used Orajel before and it works well for the occasional random toothache (especially for kids). It doesn't do much when the pain is deep in the root of your tooth though.
I was in serious need of a remedy so I found a cure online that claimed to work. It said you could place vanilla extract on your tooth to make it stop hurting. I did this and it didn't seem to have much of an effect on me. I have used cloves and clove oil before but didn't have any on hand. Clove oil really does help but I don't know if it would work on a really bad toothache.
Baking soda and water is the first thing that actually worked for me. Just take a couple tablespoons of baking soda to one (small) glass of very warm water, then gargle with it. Hold it in your mouth for at least 45 seconds each time, spit and then repeat until all of it is gone. The baking soda neutralizes the acid eating away at your roots stopping the pain. The comfort doesn't last long though. After about thirty minutes it wears off and you have to do it again.
If you have any toothpaste for sensitive teeth then use it. Some of them actually help reduce pain as soon as your brush your teeth. I used an off brand and it worked better than expected however it didn't make my tooth stop hurting completely.
The pain medicine I tried taking didn't do much until I used Tylenol Extra Strength. Two of those and then fifteen minutes later the pain was gone! Ibuprofen didn't do anything for me. I took more than the recommended dose for a full 24 hours and it didn't help one bit. The Tylenol will now be a staple in my house. It takes the pain away completely.
These are temporary remedies until you can see a dentist. If your tooth or gum is swollen and looks (or even feels) infected then go to the emergency room. An infected tooth can be serious, even fatal , if left untreated. The infection can spread through your blood so don't take it lightly. You need antibiotics immediately.
