The Top 10 Break-Up Songs

The Title Speaks for Itself

Wade Souza
The term break-up likely provokes a wide range of feelings to everyone who has ever been on the short-end of the relationship stick. Anger, resentment, regret, panic, amusement, freedom, and sexual frustration are just some of the common withdrawal symptoms of love and love lost. The following list is meant to encapsulate all of the above feelings, so join me, the self-proclaimed General of the Dumped Army. Here goes nothing and everything all in one, angst-ridden roller coaster ride inside of a glass-case of emotion. Listen in order and buy me a drink sometime.

1. "The Scientist" by Coldplay (Soul-Searching): One of my favorite songs ever written. Coldplay at their finest and the bridge is so beautiful, this is a song that tells a story, tugs on your heart strings, and leaves you physically and emotionally drained. Perfection depiction of the struggle to understand what's going on and how much easier it feels it'd be to start over.

2. "Come Home" by William Joseph (Love): http://www.garageband.com/song?|pe1|S8LTM0LdsaSjZlO1Zmw

Do yourself a favor and listen to my favorite song of all-time by up and coming artist and Tulsa-native William Joseph. It perfectly encapsulates the most common feelings of love immediately after break-up, regardless of what the other person feels.

3. "Motorcycle Drive-By" by Third Eye Blind (Resurrection): After an intense journey of grief and pain, Stephen passionately embraces the notion, "I've never felt so alone and I've never felt so alive". Sometimes our emotions make us feel more human than ever before and we find ourselves calmly in the midst of the storm.

4. "Rootless Tree" by Damien Rice (Resentment): Damien Rice is one of my favorite artists because of his passionate, pervasive displays of raw emotion throughout his music. He exemplifies what it means to not only be a singer, but an artist as well. "Rootless Tree" takes this notion to the extreme, necessary level. As he screams, "F--- You and All We've Been Through," a dumpee feels connected intimately to Rice and experiences a full cathartic spin cycle.

5. "Bent" by Matt Nathanson (Farewell) Matt Nathanson sings a great break-up and "Bent" is one of my favorites. We are always asking what we could have done different, but we aren't the ones in control. It takes two for love no matter how great you were in the relationship or what you gave of yourself out of unconditional love.

6. "The World Spins Madly On" by The Weepies (Confusion) Beautiful harmonies, honesty in every single second of this song. Although we are stuck in the past and a thousand memories, everything goes on around us with or without our permission.

7. "Good Fight" by American Aquarium (Moving On): This song you probably have not heard, needs to played with your fist in the air out your sunroof, in a warm fall breeze, at full blast. That's what I did and look at me, I'm moving on. "I'll give you a call if I get drunk enough," is all too true, but after awhile you wise up and it becomes a joke to keep living in the past.

8. "Girlfriend" by Eve 6 (Resolve) "I know I have to let you go, but I will not be broken" is the phrase of strength we all tell ourselves, but until we truly live and breathe we will be held back. You were used to one way of life, now it's time to accept the stark truths of reality. Eve 6 is one of my favorite bands of all-time and "It's All In Your Head," is one of the most underrated albums I've heard due to management issues.

9. "Another Lonely Day" by Ben Harper (Depression): When you've hit rock-bottom, Ben Harper's harmonies are bad medicine. You need to know you're the only one in the gutter, but leave you blue as blue can be and "Another Lonely Day" is the quintessential song of solitary despair.

10. "Seventy Times 7" by Brand New (Hate) It takes a mature person to be OK with being broken up with, it takes a less mature person to say "I hope there's ice on all the roads and you can think of me when you forget your seatbelt and again when your head goes through the windshield." This may seem a little far-fetched, but sometimes our emotions get the best of us.

Break-Up Bonus: "F--- It" by Eamon (Whatever): "I don't know why I liked you so much," all the gifts, wasted words, kisses and everything means nothing now once you've been cheated on. If you're my age, this is most likely your high school break-up anthem.
