Too Small for the Bed
Select a bed and mattress that fits the bedroom size you have to work with, unless you know you will be moving in the future and don't mind being tightly squeezed in your bedroom until then. Some master bedrooms are so small that they simple cannot accommodate a king size bed at all. Before you go mattress or bedroom furniture shopping, take accurate measurements of the bedroom and sketch a rough design of the floorplan to plan out your bedroom furniture purchase wisely.
No Closets
In some states, a bedroom cannot be called or sold as a bedroom without closets. While in others states, this does not apply. No closets in a bedroom is not a huge problem if the bedroom is large enough to accommodate a wardrobe or armoire. However, it is a problem if the room is too small to accommodate enough bedroom furniture to store your wardrobe. A quick fix would be to turn a wall into a non-permanent closet by installing brackets to hole a closet pole and shelf or install drawers under your bed, and if you have a lot of clothing then you might need to do both.
All White Walls
Most of the time all white walls is too bright for a bedroom with good lighting and too boring for most bedrooms without the right bedroom decor colors and art work. Choose soothing colors to your taste to paint all four walls or paint just one wall an accent color. If you love white, dress it up by choosing a shade of white with some hint of color like Heron White rather than just leaving the basic white that comes standard in most homes and apartments. There is the occasional well planned bedroom with all white walls that works, for instance a bedroom with modern design with all bright white walls, black trim, black furniture, enhanced with black, white, and red art and accent pieces. However, for most bedrooms all white walls scream poor bedroom design and lack of planning.
No Functional Storage
Everyone knows that books, makeup, or clothing littering a room look cluttered and can make the best design and furniture look terrible. Most would agree that throwing enough out to look like a model home is not an option either. So what do you do? Plan and create functional storage as well as storage that conceals as part of your bedroom design. It is perfectly appropriate to have a bookshelf in your bedroom if it keeps the books from spilling all over the floor. If you love DVDs and music, and this is spilling all over your room, stash them in storage boxes that match your decor to reinstate the serenity and let your great bedroom design shine again minus the clutter.
Fan Placement Issues
Fans poorly placed in a bedroom can ruin the design completely like a giant fly in your soup at a restaurant. If you have a four poster bed with top rails, the fan might need to come down completely or be moved. In large bedrooms, it appears to be standard for builders to place a fan in the center unless the ceiling has a tray. Centered fans in giant bedrooms hardly ever work well with great bedroom design. Move the fan yourself or hire an electrician or handyman, depending on your local codes, to move the fan to a new location to suit your bedroom design perfectly.
Window Issues
Some bedrooms don't have any windows or the windows they have are too small. Conceal this poor bedroom design flaw with curtains. Arrange and hang your curtains to create the appearance that there is a larger window by hanging a shear that reflects light centered between the curtains. Hang the curtains outside the window's perimeter to create an optical illusion that the space is larger than it is. If you lack windows, hang mirrors or art with glass to call the attention away from your lack of windows.
A Terrible View
Your bedroom design might include wonderful large windows with beautiful trim or maybe antique framing. However, the problem is that you are overlooking the garbage bin for your neighborhood or facing your neighbor's mess. In this case, purchase the window film available at your local home development store to conceal the scene but save the beauty and light of the windows. These films are available in many designs and colors including blue skies with white fluffy clouds, garden scenes, flower watercolors, and other prints.
Bare Walls
Imagine that you have everything perfect in your bedroom-the perfect furniture, curtains, storage, windows, and color scheme. Except all your walls are naked and bare. Bare walls scream that something is missing in the design, most of the time. Create some wall art yourself using photographs or craft materials. Or purchase some beautiful artwork that complements your bedroom decor. If you are the collecting type, create one wall with your collectibles. If this talent is just not in you, find a local company that specializes in pulling your room together. Or for free help ask a family or friend with the talent to lend you a helping hand.
Naked Windows
If you have a beautiful scene outside your windows like a forest, lake, fountain, or beach-then leaving them naked might be part of the perfect bedroom design as long as you have privacy. This would apply if you have modern windows, entire walls that are windows, or windows with fabulous architecture. However, for all the other windows out there, curtains hide the plainness, tattered screens, or aging aluminum. If you have a great scene but bare-bone windows and desire to skip the curtains, hire a handyman to install frames around your windows for great window design which will enhance your bedroom design. It is amazing what changing the frames and adding sills can do to a window and overall bedroom design. Changing the framing or casing around your windows can change the whole look and style of the bedroom completely.
Poor Lighting
You can have the everything else perfect in your bedroom design but if you have poor lighting, no one will be able to see it clearly. A great bedroom design will have several lighting options to accommodate all your various needs conveniently. Your bedroom will benefit from a form of overhead lighting that is capable of pouring light into every corner which will make cleaning and getting dressed easier. You might also desire table lamps, desk lamps, and reading lamps for more precise direct lighting in certain areas. The best designed bedrooms will also have decorative lighting options that can enhance the mood, this can include strategically placed candles, flameless candles, wall sconces, or artistic lighting and lamps.
