10. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn (1982)
It wouldn't feel right to not include Star Trek and when it comes to Trek, it was at its best here, which presents James Kirk's rebirth from a midlife crisis to combat an old enemy.
9. Starship Troopers (1997)
Although this tale of humanity's war against giant insects promotes the opposite viewpoint of the original book it's based on, it's an intriguing satire in its own right, to go right along with the bug-blasting action scenes.
Part 1984, part Fahrenheit 451 and with an action twist, Equilibrium presents a dystopian future where emotions are treated like a diagnosed disease.
Paul Verhoeven's story of a man applying for a virtual vacation in his mind only to learn the truth about the world around him is a classic action movie, with plot twists that leave every viewer asking what really happened.
Forget the sequels. There's a reason that this futuristic tale of a virtual reality world dominated by computers was such a success.
When Peter Weller's character in Robocop is shot to bits, only to be reborn as a cyborg policeman, the bloody action - and satire-has only begun.
What, this isn't set in the future? Maybe not but considering that the entire plot revolves around time-traveling cyborgs coming to the present in an attempt to kill humanity's savior before he can grow up, it still counts.
Most would rank Terminator 2 above this; however, it's hard to beat the intensity of the original. The film that made Arnold Schwarzenegger a star.
How do you top the original? Well, the title makes it clear enough; more aliens. However, what makes Aliens so fantastic is a lot more complicated. It's an action movie that gets your heart racing, your blood pumping and makes you truly care about the fate of the characters.
Not just a great sci-fi movie. Not just an amazing visual depiction of the future and not just a fascinating character study. This adaption of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is an amazing experience and the kind of movie that never leaves your mind once you've seen it once. Truly, the greatest futuristic action movie of all time.
