The Top 10 New Year's Resolutions for a Person Looking to Get Back in Shape

How to Work Off that Extra Belly Fat

John A. Derulo
Each year, tens of thousands of people make a promise to themselves that "this year is the year I finally get in shape." A noble cause, however the sad truth is that most people never reach this goal. Many new gym-goers do not realize that getting healthy and staying fit is a full time job. You must dedicated yourself both to a workout regiment, and a strict diet plan.

Here are some things that have helped me get in shape over the past year, and can help anyone looking to tone up their bodies succeed.

1. You won't make progress unless you try. Too often I see people say things like "Oh, I'll start going to the gym next week when I feel better." I hear things like this all the time, and most often this excuse keeps people from ever starting a diet or workout plan. No one said exercising and eating healthy was easy, but your body will thank you for it if you do.

2. Follow a workout or exercise routine made strictly for beginners. There are a vast cornucopia of sites dedicated to the fitness lifestyle, and all of them have tips and workout regiments designed for people who would like to get in shape.

3. Find a weight loss buddy. I have found that it is much easier to stay motivated when you have a friend or family member who is in the same position as you. Working out and exercising is much easier when you have someone to share the experience with.

4. Hire a personal trainer. It is the job of a personal trainer to help you succeed and keep you motivated. Every gym has them available (although not for free).

5. Try and cut out junk food as much as possible. Diet is arguably just as important as exercise for someone who is looking to shed a few pounds. Cut out things like chips, soda and candies as they are just empty calories and often times do not fill you up.

6. Treat yourself to a "cheat meal" once a week. Even the most dedicated bodybuilders and fitness gurus enjoy having cheat meals. Having a cheat meal once every 7 days will cut down on cravings for junk food throughout the week. Set a certain date or time where you can eat whatever you want.

7. Set a routine you can follow. Designate a certain time you go to the gym or exercise. Having a set schedule will let your body get used to working out at certain times, and after a while, you will actually look forward to exercising during that set time.

8. Do not get discouraged if you do not see results right away. Getting in shape takes time. However if you follow a regimented workout routine and diet, you will see results fast.

9. Do not follow any "fad" diets. It's been scientifically proven that all you need is to lower your caloric intake, and exercise for at least 30 minutes a day to lose weight.

10. And finally, Have Fun! It may seem like a drag to be running on a treadmill or lifting heavy weights at first, but before you know it, you will be craving your next workout.

And there you have it, 10 tips and resolutions designed to help you get back in shape for the New year. It takes time and dedication to get in shape, but the results you see will be more than worth it.

  • Diet is one of the most important aspects of getting in shape.
  • Following a workout or exercise program designed specifically for beginners is advised.
  • Never give up! Having a workout partner or personal trainer can help you stay motivated.
You'll never make progress if you don't try. Actually joining a gym or starting to run is the first step to change.
