The Top 3 Detroit Area Burger Joints

Stacy J. Day
There aren't many people who don't enjoy a good hamburger from time to time. Hamburgers are one of the many all-American foods that people eat on a regular basis, and they're served at picnics, barbecues, fairs, and many other functions as well. Although I would much rather have a home cooked hamburger, which allows me to put anything on it that I want, I do have some favorite restaurants that I like to go to get a good burger. Unfortunately most of my favorite burger joints are in or just outside my hometown of Detroit, Michigan. I've never been a big fan of McDonald's, Wendy's or Burger King, although their burgers do taste somewhat better in the south, which is where I live currently.

Jaws Jumbo Burger

This restaurant is unique because it's named after the movie Jaws, with the huge killer shark. My husband and I loved to eat at Jaws Jumbo Burger when we lived in Detroit because their burgers really are jumbo...and delicious. They make their burgers fresh, without the use of microwave ovens, and you can definitely taste the difference. I'm also a huge lemonade fan, and they make the best freshly squeezed lemonade that tastes just like homemade. Jaws Jumbo Burger is located on Orchard Lake Road between 12 & 13 Mile Roads in Farmington Hills, so we didn't go to this burger joint as often as we would have liked because of the distance from our home, but we would have liked to have gone every week. Blimpy Burgers (Crazy Jim's)

My sister and I stopped at this burger joint one day while on our way to the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, which is about 45 minutes from Detroit. We had never heard of it before, but the smells emanianting from the restaurant were great, prompting us to stop there and see what they had to offer. I must say, we were quite impressed. Not only was the service quick and efficient, but the staff were friendly, the portions were very generous, and the Blimpy double cheeseburger on onion roll was to die for! My sister and I talk about Blimpy Burgers all the time, but we've only gone there one time because of the distance, unfortunately. During my next visit to Detroit, I'm going to make a special trip to Ann Arbor (S. Division and Packard) just to eat one of those fantastic burgers again. Check out

Bates Burgers

With two locations, one in Livonia and one in Farmington Hills, if you live just outside the Detroit area, you've got to try these burgers. The exterior looks like a 50s restaurant, which to me is quite fun and attractive. Once you walk into a Bates Burger location, you'll quickly discover why they made my list. The delicious smell of burgers, fries and onions cooking is almost intoxicating, and the food tastes just as good as it smells. You can get hamburgers, fries, hotdogs and much, much more at Bates. The location that I used to visit was in Livonia, which is on 5 Mile Rd. I worked nearby, so it was convenient to stop by before or after work.
