The top three fashion New Year's resolutions for this year come directly from my overstuffed closet. In an attempt to become more fashionable in the new year, the following fashion New Year's resolutions will be adopted.
Out with the Old, In with the New
As the popular New Year's saying goes, the first New Year's fashion resolution involves cleaning out old, outdated fashion pieces from the closet and replacing them with more modern alternatives. The old Levi's from 1998, though comfortable, were best worn with the hiking boots and slouch socks before the year 2000. Work clothes that seemed classic but now look worn or out of touch with current fashions will be boxed and donated. The blazer with big shoulder pads is also out.
My favorite Desperate Housewives velour fitted leisure suits are here to stay, however. Gabby is still wearing them on the television show, so I plan on taking her fashion cue that they are still fashionable. It's hard to part with outfits that are at least somewhat fashionable and comfortable. I promise to only wear my warm up nylon suits for walking though. I can compromise with fashion.
Trendy for Ten Minutes
In the new year, the second resolution involves avoiding the hottest trends for at least a month. Too often trendy becomes out-of-date before you get to wear the outfit twice. One minute it's those skinny jeans you had to have, the next thing you know fashion has moved back to boot cut jeans. It's a neverending fashion cycle. The key is to find fashion pieces that are going to be both trendy and stable for at least a season or two.
Make More Unique Fashion Statements
There's a happy place in my personal fashion world where trendy and classic meet and create a unique look. This year the goal is to find that place and make it uniquely my own. A trendy, bold top paired with a classic black skirt, or my favorite jeans with the latest sweater fashion are a few examples of how this might occur.
Fashion risks are also an important part of this New Year's fashion resolution. I want to be able to mix and match patterns the way Mondo Guerra did in Project Runway. That may never happen, but the underlying resolution is to make more bold statements and make them my own. Lady Gaga did it in a grand way. My resolution may not be in the larger-than-life fashion category, but even a few simple fashion steps will improve my chances of creating unique and fun looks.
