The Top 3 Types of College Scholarships

Richard Banks
The job market in the United States has been on a downward spiral and unemployment rates have fluctuated between 9% and 10% nationally. One possible solutions to get Americans working again is higher education. Although a college education will not always guarantee employment, a college education sets you apart from the rest of the applicant pool.

A college education is considered a foundation for career advancement, but canthe affordability of a college education can be a major concern. Student loans are an option but are they truly the best option? Student loans are popular, but unfortunately repayment can often cause undo financial hardship. On the other hand, college scholarships involve little to no risk and provide the biggest reward.

College scholarships can be broken down into three categories depending on need: academic scholarships, private scholarships, and need based scholarships. Selecting the appropriate college scholarship takes more than just an application, however. Research each college scholarship and pay close attention to the intricate details prior to applying.

Need Based College Scholarships

Need based college scholarships will take the applicant's academic record into account, but the main criterion is financial need. The purpose is to bridge the financial gap. Middle class parents may make too much money to qualify for financial aid, but not enough for the student's school of choice.

This is where need based college scholarships come into play. Another determining factor is students living below established poverty lines, under represented ethnic classes, and mentally disadvantaged applicants.

Private College Scholarships

Private college scholarships are awards from individuals, business, and companies based upon select criteria. Criteria include specialized skills directed toward a specific field of study. At times, private scholarships involve essay presentations.

With any writing assessment, the applicant will need to express their best work. The thoughts will need to flow off of the page and convey the meaning of the topic with power and passion.

Academic College Scholarships

Academic college scholarships are also known as merit scholarships. The work performed in high school and beyond will pay off dividends. Academic college scholarships are based upon the grades an applicant has received throughout their educational career. More often than not, applicants are the top 1% of a graduating class.

In select cases, academic college scholarships can encompass athletic, community service, and stewardship. Prior to applying for this type of award, a student should have an exemplary record, community service/volunteer hours logged, and outstanding citizenship.

Keep in mind the search for college scholarships should be preformed early and often. Waiting until the due date for any award will not sit well with committee administering the award. The goal is to standout from the rest of the applicants. Remember, millions of high school students as well as returning college students may have the same needs. Applicants do not want to be just another application, but rather a person worthy of receiving the organization's money.
