The Top 5 Facts About Frogs

Bridget Ilene Delaney
Frogs are interesting animals. Some people think that frogs and toads are the same animal, but they are not. Frogs have a more slender body and have to live near water. Toads have a fatter body and can live on dry land. Frogs also look slimy while toads look dry. Neither frogs or toads can give people warts. While these facts are interesting, there are plenty of interesting facts about frogs.

Cats Beat Frogs by 7 Lives

It is said that cats have nine lives. However, it is said that frogs have two lives. If this is true, cats beat frogs by 7 lives. The word, "amphibian" means "two lives." Frogs are said to have two lives because of the first in the water and then the second where they have to live near the water, but live on the land.

Jelly and Eggs?

Jelly and eggs sounds like a strange breakfast. However, if jelly and eggs are mentioned when talking about frogs, food is not being mentioned. Instead, frog reproduction is being mentioned. This is because frogs lay their eggs in a jelly that deters other animals from eating the eggs. Nobody wants to eat this jelly as it tastes bad.

Predator Frogs

To humans, frogs seem very docile. They don't hurt humans and they don't hurt bigger animals like dogs, cats, or horses. In fact, frogs can be scared of all those things. However, frogs are carnivorous. Small frogs eat insects. Big frogs may eat snakes, baby turtles, and mice. Frogs always eat these things while they are alive and would rather die before eating a dead animal.

Putting Those Legs to Use

Many people think frogs only use those powerful back legs for jumping. Jumping is one of the uses of the back legs. Some frogs jump up to 10 times the distance of their body length. Frogs also use their back legs to dig and burrow.

A Dead Frog's Age Can Be Known

It may not be possible to know the age of a frog that's alive. The only way the age of a live frog can be known is if it is known when the frog was born. However, the age of a dead frog can be found. This is because a frog bones forms rings just like the trunk of a tree. The rings inside a frog's bones can be counted to determine the age of the frog.
